September 8, 2006. Lou Sleater is celebrating Birthday # 80 today! Lou is the currently the 46th oldest of 63 living former Browns, and only one day older than a fellow we will congratulate on his September 9th birthday tommorrow.

Lou Sleater was
a travelin' man.

Happy Birthday, Lou Sleater!

Lefty pitcher Lou Sleater broke into the big leagues with the St. Louis Browns in 1950. In his three year run with the Browns, sadly, Lou's record was a deflating 1 and 10.

Sleater's time with the Browns contains an element that doesn't show up in his career stats page. Most notably is the fact that Sleater was one of 4 Browns traded to the Yankees on July 31, 1951 in exchange for Cliff Mapes. Somehow, he never pitched for the Yankees that year and, by 1952, he was back with the Browns, creating the stat page impression that he never left in the first place.

On May 12, 1952, however, Lou Sleater was involved in a trade that stood up and showed up in the record book. He and Freddie Marsh were dealt to the Washington Senators in exchange for infielder Cass Michaels.

Sleater's 7-year career carried him from the Senators to the Athletics to the Braves to the Tigers and, finally, to the Orioles. His big league time was done after the 1958 season and Sleater left the game with a career record of 12 wins, 18 losses, and an ERA of 4.70.

Enjoy your natal day, Baseball Satchel Man! Hope you're happy and healthy and that you stay that way!

I just sent him a baseball card autograph request a few days ago too. I wish I knew that it was his b-day. I would have wished him a happy one in my letter!
