If you folks don't know, former (briefly MLBer) Rod Allen is the color man for the Tigers for the last few years. Being a life long Detroit regioner, I don't remember him playing at all in 1984 (his most productive year, although he played for Seattle, and Cleveland in 83 and 88 respectively). I am just looking for ONE person that remembers for sure that he played. It would comfort me, a tiny bit. If you are the one who remembers, please tell of a play he made or missed?

I don't recall him playing, but then who can remember someone who had 50 At Bats, a BA of .220, with 0 home runs and 3 RBIs?

Baseball Reference says he played in 27 games that season. I wasn't alive back then, but from listening to him make references to when he was on the 84 champs, I can see how someone not informed might think he was on the whole season. I think its worth 5 drinks in the Rod Allen Drinking Game everytime he mentions his role on that team. I wonder if he'd be the color guy if it wasn't for those 27 games...Kaline needs to come back to the booth.

I remember going "HUH?" when he was picked on the 25-man roster at the beginning of spring. Sparky always seemed to have one spot reserved for a surprise pick - later on I called it the Chris Pittaro spot.
I just had a little fun with the retrosheet reference.
Surprisingly, the Tigers had their famous hot streak when Rod got his playing time. He was the DH in Jack Morris' no-hitter (and went 0 for 3). The Tigers went 13-0 in his first 13 games that Rod played for them. Then they had their little losing streak in Seattle, where Rod played 2 games. He was sent to the minors after this, and never played for them again. At this point he was hitting .296 with an OBP of .367 (and a SLG of .333).
I wonder how many players started their careers with a team going 13-0 in his first 13 games? This could be his claim to baseball trivia fame.

Rod Allen played with the Tigers for a short time in their 1984 championship season. He was one of the young players brought up and only played in a few games, mostly as a designated hitter. Some of the others I remember being brought in for a " cup of coffee" were Mike Laga, Nelson Simmons and Scott Earl. I don't remember anything special about Rod, but I do remember him being on the team and playing.
