I was thinking Roberto Clemente died with 499 HR but that's not what the list says. Who, or what, am I thinking of?
Also, who and when were the most Pirates in the top ten for league hitting average? Seems like early 60's - could you help with their names and averages? Thanks!!

Clemente died with exactly 3000 hits. Lou Gehrig was forced to retire at 493 home runs.

I don't know who or what you're thinking of but Dante Bichette retired with a career .299 Batting Avg. and a .499 slugging avg., to think one more hit and he might have ended up with a .300 avg and .500 slugging avg.

Cap Anson had 2,995 career hits. He had over 3,000 hits for awhile, but back then walks were counted as hits. MLB went back through the records and took some hits away.

If you want to go back a ways, in 1927 the Pirates had 4 in the top ten.
Paul Waner led the way with .380, his brother Lloyd followed with .355, Pie Traynor finished 5th in the league with .342 and Joe Harris placed 9th with his .326 average.

Then add up his NL records using baseball-reference as a resource. You'll find it's 2,995. If you include his National Association hits, then he's above 3,000.
