I didn't just wear blue as a cast member in many of my friend Mae West's movies.

Mini biography
A journeyman major league baseball player, "Turkey Mike," as Donlin was known because of his unique strut, played on seven teams in a 12-year career, mostly in the National League, from 1899-1914. After being traded (for what turned out to be the last time) to New York from Pittsburgh in 1912, Donlin refused to report to the Giants, instead concentrating on his seemingly budding film career, which never materialized.

No connection to baseball, but Charles Butterworth does fit the "maple sugar" clue

Mini biography
Popular supporting actor in 1930's Hollywood, often portraying effete, WAFFLING types, even though he was not a professional politician in real life.

Trivia
Twenty years later, became the inspiration for cereal icon Cap'n Crunch.

Although his death in a single automobile crash was listed an "accident," some say that Butterworth was extremely despondent over the death of close friend Robert Benchley a few months earlier and deliberately crashed his speeding car.

Buried in St. Joseph Valley cemetery in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana.

Was engaged to actress Natalie Schafer, who played Mrs. Thurston Howell III on "Gilligan's Island" (1964), at the time of his tragic death.

Also, Mae West appreared in a film with Mr. Baseball Tom Selleck.

i couldn't get it...Irving Bacon was the brother of Lloyd Bacon, who appeared in Kill the Umpire, which would account for blue, but Lloyd never worked with Mae West

Beans Reardon was friends with Mae West and used to work her films, though I don't see too many credits listed for him at the IMDB database.

The umpire clue finally let me figure it out: John "Beans" Reardon was a major league ump who was also in Mae West films...

And this is it for Reardon's film credits on IMDB...

I tried by starting with Mae West, and didn't notice his name there. I doubt if he changed his name for professional reasons...
