View Full Version : Pick TEN - pitchers

To complete our look at the membership of an EXCLUSIVE Hall-of-Fame, let's examine pitchers. Of course, there are many more pitchers in Cooperstown than players at any other position -- so let's expand the "elite" number to ten.
If the Elite Hall of Fame were limited to TEN pitchers, who should they be?
In this case, I will also provide career Win-Loss totals. Of course that may not be fair to pitchers who were mainly relievers and closers, or even to some best known for high strikeout totals or low ERA's -- so use those W-L numbers only if you wish to.

Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux. Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez are all still active, so they are not yet eligible for the Hall of Fame. All four will surely be added to the Cooperstown list some day in the future.
When these pitchers do become eligible, would any of them make your "Top Ten" list?
Who would they "bump" from your current Top Ten list?

I'm amazed that on a list like this, with pitchers like Clemens, Maddux, etc not yet eligible, that some did not vote for Walter Johnson among their ten votes. Even with the active players included, I still have Big Train as #1 all-time, but to have him below the top ten without the active players/Negro Leaguers eligible, that is just ....unbelievable.

Bob Gibson was the most dominating pitcher of his era.

Pedro needs to be there. He would be one of my 10.

Walter Johnson, Pete Alexander, Tom Seaver, Cy Young, Lefty Grove, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, and Warren Spahn. My other two would be Smokey Joe Williams and Satchel Paige. Also Maddux, Clemens, and Martinez belong in this group but aren't yet eligible.

Unfortunately, I only picked my top 4 in the poll above (W.Johnson, Grove, Young and Matthewson), but here's the rest of my list:
1.) Walter Johnson
(Roger Clemens)
2.) Lefty Grove
(Satchel Paige)
3.) Cy Young
(Greg Maddux)
4.) Christy Matthewson
5.) Grover Cleveland Alexander
(Randy Johnson)
6.) Warren Spahn
---------------- (top 10 if including active players and Paige)
7.) Tom Seaver
8.) Sandy Koufax
9.) Nolan Ryan
10.) Steve Carlton
------------------(top 10 without active players and Paige)
(Pedro Martinez)
Parentheses - active or non-eligible players - they are placed where I feel they belong on the list.

I only took Alexander, Grove, Johnson, Matthewson, Seaver and Young. Others are fine but none is automatic.

I actually find the results of this one to be fascinating. Whenever we've had debates here before over the greatest pitchers of all-time rarely, or at least probably not often enough, does Cy Young's name get mentioned among the top candidates. Yet, when asked for a list of the top ten here, more of us placed Young there than any other pitcher. I have no idea, what, if any, conclusions we may draw from that. I just find it interesting.
