If the Hall of Fame were limited to just four players at each position, whom would you choose at SHORTSTOP?

I picked Aparicio for bringing back the steal, Banks for showing a power shortstop, Wagner for overall greatness, and Appling for old time's sake

This is a bad premise, because the game isn't going to stop being played. To limit players per position removes any and all legitimacy of the HOF as a living museum.

This is fairly easy, with no Ripken on the list. Wagner, Vaughan, Cronin, and Jennings are pretty vastly superior to everyone else, in my view.

Among retired players, I would choose Honus Wagner, John Henry Lloyd, Arky Vaughan, and Cal Ripken.
However, I have Alex Rodriguez listed as third overall among shortstops. I don't know if he'll pass Lloyd for second on the list by the time he retires.
Ripken's not on the list of options because he's not in Cooperstown yet.
Lloyd is a more problematic case. Appling hasn't listed any Negro Leaguers in his list. We do have some members who say they can't rank Negro Leaguers because they don't have the ability to do so. Thus, a poll that includes Negro Leaguers among the selections would underrate them for that reason, and the vote would be distorted. A poll for best MLB players would produce more accurate results. On the other hand, it is unfair to penalize Negro Leaguers in these polls because they were victimized by past discrimination.
Perhaps it would be better to run two concurrent polls: one for best MLB players, and one for best players overall. The second poll would be limited to those who feel competent enough to include Negro Leaguers in their overall rankings. Voters in the second poll would, of course, also be eligible to participate in the MLB-only poll.

As might be suggested by my board name, I'd vote for Wagner four times ;)
