if the Hall of Fame were limited to just four players at each position, who would you choose from the list of HOF Third Basemen?

I'd pick Schidmt, Matthews Baker and Brett.

I'd pick Schidmt, Matthews Baker and Brett.
Mathews, Traynor, Robinson, Schmidt.
Hard to keep Brett and Boggs off though.
Where is Boggs in this poll?

Stan Hack should probably go on as well.

Mathews, Traynor, Robinson, Schmidt.
Hard to keep Brett and Boggs off though.

If I may ask, why Traynor? He was an overrated batsman whose fielding average was actually 1 point below league average. Meanwhile, Brett had a 135 OPS+ while also fielding 1 point below average.
Even accounting for the problems for Fielding Stats, I think that Brett was clearly better.

I voted for Kell as a 4th choice behind Schmidt, Brett, and Mathews. It's a protest, because my 4th choice was Wade Boggs.

I too would have picked Boggs, but went with my 5th choice, Baker.

Baker, Mathews, Schmidt and (since no Boggs) Traynor

Baker, Mathews, Schmidt and (since no Boggs) TraynorWow, Schmidt third WITHOUT being behind Brett. So you got Brett no higher than sixth.

Well, it might not be in order.

Schmidt, Mathews, Brett, and Brooksie.

I put them in no particular order. I just selected four out of the list given. But yes, I do think Schmidt was better than Brett. And possibly Boggs too. And I like Pie Traynor.

And possibly Boggs too.No, my point was that Schmidt usually doesn't get ranked that low unless he's behind Brett, and you don't have him behind Brett (and rightfully so)

<And I like Pie Traynor.>

And Pie likes the era he played in  ;)

I concur in those choices and sentiments.

From this Poll:

Mike Schmidt, Mullet, Eddie Mathews and Home Run. (But normally Wade Boggs takes this spot).

I wanted to pick Traynor, Brett, and Baker, so I did. I didn't want to pick Schmidt, but I did anyway because of peer pressure.

Where's Boggs?

In the first base thread, Appling said that he was limiting his list of choices to players inducted into Cooperstown. In practice, he's limiting the list to major leaguers inducted into Cooperstown, and omitting Negro Leaguers.

Since Sandberg is not listed among the choices at 2B, I believe the list Appling is using was created before the 2005 induction (which thus omits both Sandberg and Boggs). Eckersley is listed as a pitcher, and he was inducted in 2004. Therefore, I would think Appling's list of Hall of Famers dates from the end of the 2004 calendar year. This would account for Boggs' omission from the list of choices here.

Boggs didn't crack my top four list anyway.

My choices at third:
Schmidt, Mathews, Baker and Brett.
