as the Yankees Chick (http://yankees-chick.blogspot.com) I should really know this, but I don't, so here I am!
Why doesn't the Yankees' team captain wear any sort of insignia like the "C" Jason Varitek wears? Is it simply because the Yankees are very traditional with their uniforms or is there a historical purpose?
thanks :)

In my opinion the "C" belongs on a hockey sweater, not on a baseball uniform. I think it just looks silly in baseball.
My best guess to answer the questions is simply that the yankees do stay very traditional in their uniform. Outside of the material it's made from, and the fit of the uniform, the only real change in the past 50 years was adding the white outline to the numbers and letters of the road uniform.
IMHO the Pinstripes are sacred and should not be tinkered with in any way. It even bugs me to see them sell the Jerseys at the Stadium with names on the back. No names on a Yankee uniform ever, that's the way it's been and the way it should be!

I never really thought about it. Until recently I did not realize any Baseball teams did it. It is something they borrowed from Hockey. ( I believe)
Also, the Yankees have not always had a Captain. For almost 40 years the position was vacant between Gehrig and Munson.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Derek Jeter was offered the "C" for captain on his uniform, but he declined. Anybody else hear this???

I agree. When the Reds made Barry Larkin captain a few years ago, they put a wishbone C (the same C that is on their hats) on his uniform. It just looked silly.
They need to come up with something else. Maybe the captain should wear different colored socks, or a different hat. A beret maybe, or a top hat.

actually, Varitek wears the C on his jersey so he remembers what position he needs to go when he takes the field...
Manny heard this and wanted one for his jersey too

Varitek wears the "C" just to remind him and everyone watching that's he's the team captain.....along with all the other Red Sox players. He likes to admire that C in the mirror. Kinda vain, don't you know?! Or is that vein?

I thought that looked pretty cool with the Wishbone C on the jersey.
Also, when the Cubs had Sammy Sosa as team captain,he wore a "C" on his jersey sleeve.
