Would you guys rather have Doerr or Gordon on your team?
My vote goes to Gordon, who should have been in the Hall a long time ago.

Are you talking for career or at their peak? Doerr's overall career probably is a tad better, but otherwise I take Gordon. Nevertheless, I would second the notion Gordon belongs.

Gordon is Jeff Kent with much better defense.

Well, I suppose both are valid, but I was leaning towards Career

Doerr is a deserving HOFer, but Gordon was a better player. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten more recognition than he has so far.

What he said.
Gordon's one of those guys that got a rep as an overrated New York player, and as a result of the backlash is criminally underrated.

Why are many of you picking Gordon when his career average is 20 point lower than Doerr??
Does it have to do with YS and FP??

Bill James has looked at Doerr and Gordon's home/away splits, and there's absolutely no doubt Doerr's stats look a lot better because of Fenway, and that Gordon's look a lot worse because of Yankee Stadium, mainly its pasture in left field at the time.

Gordon. Doerr may have a slightly longer career, but then Gordon missed all the war years, while Doerr had probably his best year during the war. Doerr was a really good defensive player, Gordon was even better. Gordon was not a high average hitter, but with power and walks was probably just as good overall as Doerr. Gordon should be in the HOF, I'm not so sure about Doerr. He tends to be an overrated player IMO.

I prefer Gordon by a modest margin. Not ecited about either for the HoF. Gordon's career was too short (he did lose two years to the war) and Doerr just doesn't seem productive enough for a right-handed hitter in Fenway. I may not be giving them enough credit for their defense as 2B's though.

Bobby Doerr. Bobby Doerr was a much better defensive 2nd baseman. He frequently lead the league in double plays, assists and putouts. He once went 414 chances without an error. He has 214 career errors over 14 seasons. Joe Gordon has 260 errors over 11 seasons. Gordons career fielding percentage is lower than the league 2nd baseman fielding percentage. Bobby Doerr was also a very good hitter never batting below .270. Although I will give Joe Gordon that he played in Yankee Stadium and Cleveland Municipal Stadium. But I think eveyone is underating Bobbby Doerrs supreme defense.

Gordon had an excellent defensive reputation. Win Shares gives Doerr a very small defensive edge, 5.23 to 5.19 defensive win shares per 1000 defensive innings at second. But if you even out the park issue, Gordon was a considerably better hitter. Doerr was one heck of a player, but when they played, Gordon was better--and the MVP voters agreed as Gordon regularly bested Doerr in MVP voting and finished with 1.57 MVP shares to Doerr's 0.93. In Win Shares, Doerr has a higher career total, 281-242, but he also lost two less years to wartime service, which largely negates that. Gordon's three best years in win shares total 85, Doerr 81. Gordon's best five consecutive years in win shares total 134, Doerr 127. Doerr was impressive, but at their peaks, Gordon was even better IMO.
