Hi all. I am looking to sort of get back into baseball cards. It has been a while since I have bought any, however. So I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for me. Is it best to get some packs from say KMart or buy a Hobby Box online or something? What is a decent product to purchase now? Any ideas on where I should be looking to get the best bang for my buck?
Thanks in advance.

If you're just looking to get back into the hobby, one thing you can do, if you're not expecting to get single gem finds, is buy those prepackaged bricks that stores like KMart and Meijer sell. You won't get anything worth too much, but you'll get volume. eBay is good for that, too. There are literally hundreds of sellers who offer at all times large lots of cards. It's a gamble, though. They'll promise a few great cards scattered among many lots. You should get a decent return on investement, but you're not going to land that 1958 Mickey Mantle promised in one lot.
Many collectors who are actually fans of baseball and have respect for the sport just start off collecting players they like. From there, as they try to find stuff they don't have, they get exposed further to the hobby, which opens up new avenues to collect. Remember what's hot today can be cold tomorrow for a fickle investor. Tomorrow's hot rookie could be serving you coffee next year.

Try to find something you like and just work on getting those cards. Personally I like the old Fleer cards from the 1980s. IMO they had good photos (usually portaits, but some good action shots), nice borders (on most sets), and the superstar special cards at the end of the sets that had nice combo shots that you wouldnt see in most sets. With pictures taken during the All-Star game you would get things like All-Star Shortstops with Ripken, Trammell and Fernandez. I also like felling like I can finish things (even if I never do) and with Fleer only going from 1981-the mid 90s it lets me think that i can complete the entire run of cards.

Just buy whatever happens to catch your eye. For me, I love the Topps/Bowman Heritage sets. The new Topps Allen & Ginter set looks great. Just buy what you like, not what you think'll be worth the most, and you'll be happy.

I highly recommend the new 2006 Allen and Ginter cards. I really like the Bowman cards and Upper Deck as well. If you are looking for value, go with the Allen and Ginter... I started a thread about what everyone has pulled from them.
