This thread is meant as an introduction to our forum as well as to provide resources for those who might want to research various questions.

One thing I want to do right away is make a request: Baseball Fever has a search function, and if you want to discuss someone in this forum, please use it first. You probably would do well to limit the search to the title of the thread and to limit the search to this forum. We've covered so many candidates on an individual basis here, many of them multiple times. If you would be so kind as to do such a search, it would help those of us who have been with the site for a while avoid the tedium of plowing the same field over and over again.

The links below were selected with the following criteria in mind the thread either should a) involve a lot of posts and/or be heavily visited (but no padding posts permitted), b) involve multiple players (best 3B, etc.), or c) include valuable resource material, and preferrably meet more than one of these standards. After much consideration, I've decided against putting threads on individuals up here, so you're not likely to see much of that listed below.

Thanks. The hard part was deciding what was in and what was out. That took a little while. The rest really isn't that hard. Maintaining it is a snap. So, it's really a one-time job that I hope serves our members well.

Before you start a new thread, I'd like to ask everyone to do a few things:

1) Look to see if there's an existing thread on the topic. It's really not too interesting to plow the same ground repeatedly.

2) Understand that a key concept here is to foster, not hinder discussion. Polls which try to force people to make a choice they may not agree with may be acceptable in some cases, but not in others. In any event, I can assure you that any attempt to restrict discussion in this fashion is a red flag.

3) If you have an opinion about a topic, especially if your position is not a commonly held one, please state your opinion and the reasons supporting it up front. There's no sin in having a different viewpoint, but if you want to publicly swim against the tide, it behooves you to justify doing so.

4) Sometimes player versus player discussions help illustrate a specific point. I have no problem with such comparisons. However, other such comparisons lack this redeeming feature. I can assure you that if such a comparison doesn't serve some larger point (and if you think it does, please spell it out), I will regard that as a red flag.

5) If you want us to discuss a player who is not commonly regarded as a serious HOF candidate (much less multiple players of that quality), please provide your reasoning supporting those less well regarded candidates. If you want to foster discussion and change minds, that really is the appropriate way to proceed.

I don't particularly want to move threads to other forums or consolidate them with other threads, but the less you adhere to the above guidelines, the more likely I am to exercise my power as a moderator to do so. In extreme cases, I may even delete a thread which does not follow these guidelines.

I wish this post was not necessary, but my experience is that when a user does not comply with these guidelines, particularly on numerous occasions in a short period of time, many of the usual crew in this forum understandably regard such a behavoir as close to an attempt at a hostile takeover and respond accordingly. Many users met with hostility (whether it is justified for the reasons set out above or not) respond in kind, and that means I as a moderator have a mess to deal with. Such a scenario does not meet anyone's best interest, and I'd rather use a few ounces of prevention rather than require many pounds of cure.

Thank you for listening and for your continued and future cooperation.
