I read on this site http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2006/08/17/hinske_trade_struck/ that the sox got hinske who is going to play first, third, and rightfield.

This is a good move. Gives them a decent RF backup..good bat off of the bench and plus he can play mostly every position. And the trade is pending the Selig's approval. Let me be the 1st to say..

Welcome to Boston, Eric Hinske.

That link seems to be broken. Who'd they give up to get him?

How's that? Crede and Konerko have third and first for the Sox.

as long as they don't do some ridiculous lefty/righty platoon with he and willy mo, i like the pickup. unfortunately, i'd have to say that's a near certainty.

willy mo is such a talent, and his numbers against righties are so much better than hinske's. but tito said that the "lineup had become to dependant on right handers" or some such nonsense, so i bet he'll play the percentages by ignoring the stats, and do some platoon.

i really, really hope hinske does just take the role as pure backup. i'd finally convinced myself theo had gotten over whatever grudge he had against willy, and that he'd (willy) be the RF for the rest of the year, and would have a starting job in '07.

but as soon as tito finall acknowledged willy's effectiveness, he convinced theo to make a deal so that he wouldn't need to play with. at least thats how i see it.

man the potential implications of this deal annoy me...

lets all just pray that willy mo is still gonna be the top guy in RF, regardless of what hand the pitcher throws with.

if hinske is gonna be a pure backup, its great, if they take away willy's 365 avg against righties by playing the percentages by ignoring the statistics, ima throw me a hissy fit. big time.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But do Crede and Konerko not play third and first, respecitvely, for the Sox? Was I mistaken with that statement? ;)

I guess but he was talking about the Red Sox!

Two great, low-cost/low-risk pickups for Boston, with Hinske and Pena both being formerly highly touted (a ROY and a 1st round pick) left handed hitters who have both have success in the past.

The sox are giving up a minor leaguer or possibly cash for hinske.

Seems like a good move that should certainly bolster the team's depth. Hinkse can play 3B and 1B in addition to RF. In fact, I expect to see him more in the IF than in the OF.
