A few years ago GM Billy Beane called Durazo his "Holy Grail".
he missed nearly all of last season with surgery and signed with Texas and then was promptly released.

Why? Why is his career down the tubes?

The A's figured Dan Johnson was the answer (he's not this year) so why let the "Holy Grail" go?

I mean he's a great hitter and an ideal DH.

Well, back when Durazo was with the D-Backs, he put up good numbers (OPS/ Slugging, etc) in just half the season. He truly was under the radar. But the A's had scouts all over him, since he seemed like a natural fit for Beane's style. He just didn't pan out. He was hurt quite a bit and he just wasn't the same guy he was 4-5 years ago. The "Holy Grail" comment had something to do with only getting him for a million bucks, which obviously looked like a steal at the time...

The translation of his performance from the BOB to the Colisseum cost Durazo in the HR production department. The real problem is that his back went bad.

Maybe Johnson wasn't the answer but Swisher at 1B and Payton in LF is a better fit than Johnson at 1B and Swisher in LF . Durazo was going to ask for more money and Beane decided to pass and to turn toward his youth wich paned out .
