View Full Version : A problem with Boston's radar gun

I believe the RED SOX NATION needs to re-calibrate their radar gun.

Are the BOSOX trying to tell me that Joel Zumaya threw only a 94 MPH fastball? He consistently throws 98-101 MPH fastballs.

This could be a conspiracy to try and get into the young man's head in an attempt to make him overthrow.

Does anyone know the "rules" for radar gun readings? (ie. calibrations, independant or employee operators, )

I dunno, I was just wondering, it seems a team could shave off a few MPHs for a visiting team and maybe add a few MPHs for the home team, using it as a kind of psych ops tactic.

Anyhow, I have to say GO TIGERS! However, I am a RED SOX fan but not when they play DETROIT, plus I hate the YANKEES!

Are you crazy? Enough with the conspiracy theories. It said 102 yesterday, it probably just misread.

OKAY Jager, conspircy theories suck, but Massachusetts is the land of JFK.

What about when DETROIT was in town last year, and the game was delayed because of the Rolling Stones concert, which was like 2-3 days before?

Was this an attempt to discombobulate DETROIT'S starting pitcher?:) :o

yeah it read 102 just a little while later, i'm sure it was just a one time mistake.

and grounds crew people will occasionally fool around with the radar guns, to make the hometownere look better than he is. but its strictly for the fans, i really doubt joel goes "did i get a hundred? did i? did i???" when he throws a fastball.

How are you a redsox and a tigers fan? You're either or, you're not a true sox fan then. Your tigers aren't winning anything this year either, they'll be the next 2001 mariners. :D

Well hello there MR YANKEEKILLER from Connecticut,

I believe your theory sufferers from the either/or argumentative fallacy. I may not bleed RED SOX blood, an apparent requirement based on your post; however, I revel when they succeed, especially against the arch enemy in the empire state. Some of my favorite players were RED SOX, Freddy Lynn, Carl Yaztrezemski, Dwight Evans, Wade Boggs, etc.

Mediocre baseball in DETROIT, for many many years, has caused many of us here to adopt new "secondary" clubs to cheer for and follow. Just be thankful that your MLB team of choice has not endured an extended streak of futility.

As for your 2001 SEATTLE comment, you could be correct, only October will tell; however, it is not likely that it will take DETROIT 86 years to win a World Series Championship, that would put it at 2070.;)

Before 2004, we had an 86 year drought, so to say that we haven't endured an extended streak of futility is fallacy on YOUR part. ;)

Hi mail-tones,

I think I can safely speak for the Red Sox mods when I ask if you could kinidly tone down the font? Perhaps smaller and certainly not red?

Sorry Double X,
I did not realize that posts were required to be black, arial, size 1.
I thought I read the user agreement thoroughly, obviously not.
Please accept my apology and please don't kick me off the board.

hey, if a person wants to be both a Red Sox and Tigers fan, there's no
law within MLB ,that enforces that ...I know a lot of fans, who
love several teams, myself as well...

Boston, ain't exactly tearing up the league this season, and since the
2004 championship, have been treading water...when you have a pair
of aging pitchers in Curt and Wells, the cupboard on the farm is slightly
bare...and I haven't seen Theo pull off any deals...but that's ok..as
he probably has a plan, and is sticking to it...and I'm sure that it won't
take another 86 yrs, before the BoSox drink from the winners trophy
again.....as for the Tigers apeing the 2001 mariners, maybe...probably
not..This is a better team than that one..and we've all ready had our
slump...against the whiteSox....Seattle had a great season, but sadly
got 'cold' at playoff time..how many times has this happen , over the
course of the playoffs and series ?

as for the Yankees...they too, are are up and down...age, and injuries
have taken it's toil, on the best team that king george could buy..

and like the Red Sox are facing, they too could fail to miss the post season,
especially if the White sox get real hot....still a lot of games left..

as for the Tigers...even if they don't advance..it's been a great season
for them...and even the critics, can't take that away from them...

I'm just giving you a hard time man, but how have we not "endured an extended streak of futility?" We got one from you guys tonight, who knows what would have happened if Wily had caught that ball last night either? Now it's time to face the Yanks, hopefully this win tonight fired the boys up. We'll see...take it easy and good luck keeping the whitesox at bay. :D

Don't worry about it. No one is going to kick you off for that - it's just that big and bold red font is a little difficult to read and kind of creates a certain tone; it kind of screams at you, you know? Thanks for taking care of it. :)

Treading water eh? 95 Wins last year, tied for 3rd best record in MLB. And theres a decent chance of making the playoffs again this year, another 90+ win season, i wouldnt exactly call that treading water.

Teams sometimes jack up the gun for their home pitchers. It gets the fans going when a 100 mph fastball is posted.

malt-tones

i really doubt joel goes "did i get a hundred? did i? did i???" when he throws a fastball.

One fastball over the plate at 99 mph, and Zumaya -- pitching with his parents in the crowd in Detroit for the first time since last year's Futures Game -- was back in form. He jammed Kinsler into a pop out to third before racking up back-to-back strikeouts on Hank Blalock -- at 102 mph -- and Gerald Laird.

"I know sometimes when he gets the ball back, he turns around and I'm sure he takes a peek," Leyland said of the radar gun readings. "Shoot, if I could throw it 102, I'd look at it, too."
