Fred Sanford started his pitching career as a Brown with a 9.1 inning stint in 1943 in 3 games with no record. Fred returned to the Browns after WWII, compiling a 21-48 W-L record from 1946 to 1948. On December 13, 1948, Sanford and catcher Roy Partee were dealt to the Yankees by the Browns for catcher Sherm Lollar, pitchers Red Embree and Dick Starr, and $100,000. - Sanford was 12-10 for the Yankees from 1949 to 1951. - On June 15, 1951, Sanford was traded to the Senators by the Yankees, along with pitchers Tom Ferrick and Bob Porterfield, in exchange for pitcher Bob Kuzava. After going 2-3 for the '51 Sens, Sanford was dealt back to the Browns by Washington in exchange for pitcher Dick Starr. - Sanford then finished his career with the '51 Browns, posting 2 more wins and 4 final losses. - For the second time, Fred Sanford found himself involved in a trade for pitcher Dick Starr. In 1948, a Starr-swap took him away from the Browns. In 1951, a trade for Starr brought him back to the Browns. And so it went. With the help of Dick Starr, the circle of Fred Sanford's big league baseball life had been completed as a St. Louis Brown.
