This sucks for Minnesota fans... Too bad to hear this, I was hoping the Twins could make some more noise in the Central.

Reports out of Minnesota say that the 22-year-old Cy Young candidate is out indefinitely with a left elbow injury. However, manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters after Monday night's game that Liriano's problems appeared to be muscular in nature.

"It's a muscular problem -- as the game was going on, he started to feel it," Gardenhire said. "We had him checked out before, and everything was fine, but we'll have him checked out again. It's muscles, not his elbow."

After facing the Tigers on July 28, Liriano (12-3) missed his next start because of inflammation in the forearm. The rest did not seem to help, as he gave up four runs and a season-high 10 hits in just four innings. He struck out five.

"It started bothering me in the second inning," said Liriano, who was taken out after four innings. "It really bothered me. I couldn't throw fastball, changeup, slider or anything."

When asked if he was worried about his status, Liriano answered yes, "because it's getting worse."

Gardenhire said Liriano would be evaluated again when the Twins return from their road trip on Wednesday.

Twins pitcher Carlos Silva spoke to Liriano after the game and told him not to try to be a "hero" and pitch through pain.

"He needs to be a hero for a long time -- not a hero for just one year," Silva told reporters, according to the Pioneer Press.

"If you're going to lose him, it's better to lose him for two weeks than for his future," Silva said, according to the Star Tribune.

There goes Liriano's Cy Young chances. If the Twin have to, they should shut him down for the rest of the season.

MRI on Thursday* to see where the problem is located, forearm, shoulder or both........ but I'm sure you knew that, right?

I read the article 3 times just to make sure I wasn't missing something, but sure enough, there was nothing said about anything you said in that post.

- "out indefinitely with a left elbow injury"

- "missed his next start because of inflammation in the forearm"

Yep, sounds like rotator cuff to me...

Feel free to post the source of your insightful comments though...

But like HWR said, this sucks for him because it almost certainly ends his Cy Young possibility.

Liriano was never going to win the Cy Young, period.

Now that he's out, Santana has to play like the old Santana and carry twice the workload, given bu Liriano.

Otherwise, no playoffs.

Yeah I did. He's been complaining about a muscle in his forearm. Worst case that would mean something wrong with his ligament in his elbow. I doubt it has anything to do with the shoulder or rotator cuff.

Huh? Based on what? Even traditional stats like Wins, Liriano was up there with the league leaders despite fewer innings. He was far and away the best pitchers in the majors before this injury. There wasn't even a close second.

I wouldn't count out the Twins yet. While he isn't a Liriano, Garza is a very good, young pitcher in his own right. The Twins bats have been good enough to carry the team when they get bad outings from their starters.

Matt Garza is the real deal.

This is serious stuff. Liriano has been awesome this year. Fortunately the initial reports have the injury elsewhere than the shoulder (where the rotator cuff resides). Unfortunately if it is the elbow it could be the UCL (the Tommy John ligament).

Liriano was certainly having a CYA caliber season but his chances of winning the award were problematic. Verlander and Paplebon are providing formidable competition. This would have been a close race had all of them kept going like they are and it easily could have came down to who the ESPN talking heads boosted for the award.

ESPN would have tried their hardest to win Papelbon the CYA but I don't think he has a shot of winning it. He got his 5th blown save today.

And I agree with you that Liriano is probably looking at Tommy John surgery. That probably means he is out for all of next year too. Terrible news for him if it is as I expect.
