View Full Version : TTM Succeses and Questions

Since the other TTM Page is over 3 pages long, and it's titled "June", I figured it would be easier to start a new thread for questions and to post ttm succeses.
Since it's Sunday, I didnt get any new ones today, but I had a question.
I know people don't like when people give them a list of players, and ask whether they sign or don't sign, but I have a few names that I'd really like to know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Adrian Gonzalez
Joe Blanton
Joel Guzman
Rickie Weeks
Andy Marte
Carlos Quentin
Howie Kendrick
Erik Bedard
and Rich Harden
Thanks

None of those guys are good signers. Your best bet would be Blanton and Bedard.

That's a pretty large question there. I don't know of any current a's that are great signers, but I'm sure there are plenty of past players. Rollie Fingers signs for I think an 8 dollar donation. If they're not a HOFer, they should be somewhat easy to get. Retirees seem to be easier than regular season

I've gotten sigs from Bobby Crosby, Dan Haren, Barry Zito (took a long time), Esteban Loaiza a few years ago, Bobby Kielty, and Mark Kotsay. Former A's that sign are Eric Byrnes, Aaron Harang, Keith Foulke, and Randy Velarde. I've gotten A's prospects Dan Putnam, Omar Quintanilla, Richie Robnett, Brad Sullivan, and Derek Tharpe. I've also gotten A's ex-prospects Andre Ethier, Jeremy Bonderman, and Mark Teahen.

PHEW!!!:laugh I guess it's up to the individual, but if I was a player, getting something from the bowels of a word processor would make me toss it (and the cards) in the trash. Believe it or not, there are many who don't hand-write their letters. Glad to see you're not one of them.:)

I strongly suggest you hand-write each of your letters. You're asking for a player's autograph. . . you should take the time to show that you have a sincere interest, and that you're not a dealer. Besides, what if you got back a photocopy of his signature? I don't think you'd be too happy.

Please, heed my advice, hand-write your letters.

Sure it'll save a lot of time. It would also save players a lot of time if they just rubber-stamped items that were sent to them. . . :D

Well, that's the problem. . . I would say that a large % of guys sign their own stuff, and the likelihood of a player using a clubhouse attendant increases with his popularity. You never know, though.

IMO, it's not worth it. First of all, it's not on an official AL, NL, or ML ball. Second, the signature is bleeding. Third, you can send a ball to Fingers and it costs $8, plus shipping. Fourth, it's Tri$tar. . . quite possibly the worst company out there.

You would probably have better luck with Baldelli and Stewart than the other two. I'm not sure if Marichal and Aparicio live in the US, so if you do write to them, your best bet would probably to send it c/o the Hall of Fame.

Do you guys buy multiple sets of cards in case the player you sent one to doesn't respond? I'd hate to be left with an incomplete set.

I'm glad Morneau signs. I'd like to get his. Wonder if Johan or Mauer sign.

bailiff
09-23-2006, 02:49 PM
I believe that the ttm opportunities for Johann and Mauer are done. You've got to get them when they are in the minors. I got Johann IP a couple of years ago. Scan of Johann is on my site.
As for cards, I buy packs/boxes/team sets/lots. Whatever is cheap. A good thought to remember is to never send anything you can't afford to loose. Now as to who signs, it might be worth your time to subcribe to sportscollectors.net. It is the premier sports card autograph website.

Where do you keep all your autographs by the way?

bailiff
09-24-2006, 06:15 AM
I used to keep all my autographs in 9 page plastic holders. I know keep all of my autographs in penny sleeves in a 5000 count white box. They are all alphabeticized (sp).

Yes, this above mentioned site is very good. It allows you to input, track and share your successes. If I plan on sending to a player that I am not sure is a good signer, I always check the success rate before hand. It doesn't mean that I won't take a shot and send to him, but I don't want to waste stamps if I dont' have to.

TigersFanB406
09-24-2006, 07:35 AM
Cool. I gotta find a card store around here to get cards and the plastic sleeves.

Does anyone know how to stop smearing on a card?

Twinfan90
09-24-2006, 08:16 PM
Ive heard of 2 methods. One is rubbing baby powder on the surface of a card, the other is rubbing it down with an eraser. You have to be careful with an eraser, they CAN leave streaks. It depends on what kind of eraser your using i suppose, so try it out on a card you dont want to be safe.

You can do what Twins90 said and both methods work. What I do is avoid high-gloss cards altogether. I try to get as many Topps/Bowman Heritage cards signed, as well as Topps Total, becuase they have next to no gloss.

As far as getting multiple copies of cards, I usually do that if I can find them at a really good price. I usually pick up the base sets and I'm good to go. You don't get the SPs, but you can usually get base sets on Ebay for a per-card price of less than 10 cents a card. In fact, that's my rule. . . when buying base sets, I figure my max bid based on the 10 cent rule.

SP stands for "short print". For example, the 2006 Topps Heritage set has shortprinted cards--cards that weren't produced in lesser quantities than the other cards, thus making them harder to obtain. If you have an SP card and send it TTM, you run the risk of losing a $4-$5 card rather than a 25 cent card.

I don't know if they're all available on one page, but if you click on the "spring training" link on a team's home page, that should get you going in the right direction. What I did was copy each of the addresses and paste them into a table so I could see them better. Good luck!

im guessing an 8x10 picture, ive never done it, but the only way i can think of doing is is buying large envelope, and try sticking another one of the same size in, it may get a little wrinkeled, also, put in a case for the picture so it doesnt get damaged in the shipping, but this will probley be risky to do beacuse shipping wil cost more, and so will the case and picture, so your gona have the risk of getting a no return on it.

thats all i could think of doing, hope it mabey helped.

What I do is have pre-made thin card board holders...like mil size of a box that you get when you buy 500 envelopes...tape together one end...put photo in side...I write photos enclosed on both sides...you will have to send in large yellow envelope and ask PO to stamp it "Do not bend"...when you get reguest back...you keep the holder for future use. I have holders for all different sizes...saves time..

Glad I could help

I use a 10X12 envelope for sending to the player and include a 9x12 envelope for the return. I put 88 cents worth of stamps going to the player and then 78 cents worth of stamps coming back. I also write "Photo - Do Not Bend" on both evelopes and haven't had a problem yet.

Its the last hurrah for the minor leaguers for the year....an invitation only short season....OAK prospects going....MArcus McBeth, Dallas Braden, Mike Mitchell, Landon Powell, Kevin Melillo and Travis Buck...and maybe a few others....

Here is where you can see others that are playing...

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/news/262253.html

Another note on the AFL...players that go are playing against the best in the Minors, or what is considered the teams most highly regarded prospects...great exposure for the young players...which greatly enhances thier chances of making the ML.

If I understand ur q correctly, the coaches are brand new ones who are hoping to become future coaches, so this is pretty much their first job. I know Terry Francona was an AFL coach.

I recognize some of the names for the coaches...so some have been in the Minors for a while....I wouldn't think they would be new people, working a new job....the reason....these players are the Bonus Babies of thier organizations...So Top Quality players with top notch coaching.

You might be right...they maybe looking for exposure too...but I would suspect they are doing it for the love of the game and cash.

All of the coaches and trainers are from the minor league system. For instance, Rick Tomlin is the pitching coach for one of the AFL teams and was the pitching coach for the Harrisburg Senators this past season. Many of the coaches are former big league players and are a good source for autos.

If any of you ever get the chance to visit the AFL, I highly recomend you do so. I went three years ago. It was an autographers paradise. I that the word about the AFL is out now, so the crowds are bigger. When I went, I was one of about 28 people in the stands. My first game, I came away with over 100 autographs and 17 baseballs. The rumor floating down from MLB is that within the next couple of years, they want to expand the AFL. They want (American) players to play less down south and stay home during the winter. There are also talks about a Hawaiian winter league starting up.

I'm going to HWL baseball games for autographing and Kory Casto is not one of the players that are there. Top prospects Jeff Clement, John Mayberry Jr., and Ian Desmond will be however. The stands are dead during the night games, it says there are around 200 paid attendance every time.

Sorry, I was thinking about Desmond but typed Casto by mistake. I stand corrected. Desmond is a good kid but struggled this year at AA and was sent back to Single A. He has a great glove but struggled at the plate. He seemed to just go up swinging instead of having a plan at the plate and looking for certain pitches. Hopefully he is doing better in the the Hawaiian League.

How has the graphing been before and after the games?
