He will probably need shoulder surgery in the offseason to repair what is probably a torn rotator cuff. As a result, he can't throw and can't play the field. It must be affecting his swing too. He's hitting 7-79 over the last month, an .089 average, and his power has disappeared. He's getting himself out, swinging at pitches in the dirt and still has trouble hitting a curveball. He's a black hole in the lineup. Maddon has tried benching him and moving him down in the order.

It's time to send him to Dr Andrews to see what's up with the shoulder. If it's torn, do the surgery now, which will begin his healing and his rehab now instead of October or November. Not throwing and resting the shoulder clearly is not working, and just delaying the inevitable. Do it now, get Jonny healthy, bring up Young to be DH, and let him come back and compete like he did in the month of April this year. :gt

Excellent points, keeping him in the lineup is only going to mess up his head more then it is already.

Doesn't look like my scenario will play out. Maddon thinks he's coming out of his slump because he's walked 9 times in the last 8 games. Whoop-de-doo. He's not in the lineup to walk, but to hit HRs and drive in runs. His average is now .210 for the season after hitting a high of .309 on May 8th. Clearly something is wrong, but Maddon continues to believe he can only get out of his slump by playing him. Curious logic, since he benched Travis Lee for not hitting and didn't even talk to him about it, when Lee was going thru the same thing Gomes is. And Gomes has been in a 3 month slump.

Lets see what happens after they leave Oakland. Gomes is playing near his home this weekend. Not the time to take Gomes out of the lineup. Maybe when they get back to the trop.

I'm a Jays fan, but I have some more info for you guys.

The guys on Blue Jays broadcast were saying that he worked out (lifting) too much in the off-season, and that he has a problem with flexibility now. Apparently when he tries to extend fully (for batting or throwing) a bone rubs against a muscle in his upper arm. They said that he was looking at having surgery the day after the season ends, and that he should be ready for spring training next season if that is what he does. So it's not a rotator cuff thing. I'm not sure if playing through it will further affect his arm (ie, whether he should stop playing right now).

Sorry that I don't know the name of the injury, but I think it's a pretty obscure name.

Thanks for the information. Gomes is trying to get medical assurance, that if he has surgery, now that he would be ready to play next season.

Ya. They said that he was making sure that surgery was his best option. Hopefully the Rays will have him back next year. I always like to see the Rays do well (except against the Jays;) ). I love it when they beat the Yanks or Sox.

He is going to Cincinnati on Monday to see a specialist from the Reds, and it is expected he will be shut down and have the shoulder surgery so he can be back in time for spring training.

The Rays should have done this a month ago, IMO

From what I hear, it has been Gomes' decision to wait this long.

Gomes has been finally shut down, and Delmon Young brought up to play RF the rest of the way. Let's see if his bat can cover up for his big mouth and show us something :grouchy

Lets see if he can play an entire month in the big leagues without getting in trouble.

Yep, the pressure is on Young to put up some numbers having opened his big mouth. Who knows, maybe the Rays will be lucky and Young isn't smart enough to feel pressure! :crazy

He brought it all on himself. Now we will see if he is man enough to handle it.
