From Rotoworld.com:

According to ESPN Radio in Boston, the Red Sox have acquired Javy Lopez from the Orioles.

----

Still no confirmed reports.

I'm actually surprised. I thought the Sox would go after a catcher who can actually catch like Lieberthal, Javier Valentin or Jason LaRue instead of the overpaid DH that is Javy at this point.

How is this possible, I thought the trade deadline was over. Forgive my ignorace, but how does it work? Is it something like traded players now can't play in the playoffs? Sorry, I'm not familiar with trades after the deadline.

Players in trades after the deadline go through waviers first, then the trade goes. If I'm not mistaken.

It simply means that the players involved in the trade would have to clear waivers first. basically every team with a worse record than the BoSox would have a right to claim lopez before the trade goes through. If he is claimed then they would have the rights to trade for Javy and could prevent the Red Sox from getting him.

The waivers is probably why the BoSox are pulling the trigger on this. right now they are below the Yanks in the standings. most teams would not make a claim on Javy because of his salary, but the yankees would have no problem taking on his salary just to prevent the BoSox from getting him (they did the same thing with Canseco a few years back). If the Red Sox are going to make a play for a big name like that now is the time to do it.

As for him being elgible for the post season, I believe any player on your major league roster prior to Sept 1 is eligible for your post season roster. can someone confirm that date for me?

Basically here is what happened:

Orioles placed Javy on waivers, Red Sox claimed Javy off waivers (maybe better teams did too, but BoSox had the worst record of all claimees) and the Orioles now have two options: either just give him to the Red Sox to take his salary off their books or require the Red Sox to trade players/cash with them in return. Since the Orioles required the Red Sox to trade with them, the Red Sox must trade for Javy or else the Orioles can revoke the waiver claim and keep Javy.

I'm just curious, if two teams are statistically even (in terms of games behind), but one has a slightly higher win percentage, would that team with the slightly higher win% be able to "block" the other team from acquiring that player?

Also, once a team puts a claim on a waived player, they can't just back out of it, can they? They pretty much have to bargain so-called "good faith" to acquire that player, right? By "good faith", I mean they have to make a bona fide attempt to striking a deal.

A bona fide attempt is so ambiguous, but yes I believe they do. If a trade is not able to be reached then I think that player would move up the waiver line so a team can not simply block a trade by putting a waiver claim on the. As to the winnig percentage, I believe the team with the lower winning percentage has first right to the player.

Am I the only person who thinks that getting Javy Lopez will actually hurt the Red Sox?

I realize he's a famous player but names don't win games. And Lopez has been a fairly poor player the last two seasons. In 2005 he had a .780 OPS in 103 games. This year he sports an even worse .726 OPS in 73 games -- most of which have been played at first base. In Boston he's going to be forced to be a catcher which could be a disaster as he wasn't especially good at it in his last few years at the position and his hitting will likely suffer even more because of the more strenuous postition he'll now have to play.

I want the Yankees to win the division so I'm hoping this Lopez trade goes through. But I don't know why any Red Sox' fan would want it to.

Because he's an upgrade over Doug Mirabelli and Ken Huckaby.

At this stage in his career, Lopez is not a very productive player anymore. He's been even worse than Varitek had been in his nightmarish 2006 to date. However, you can't really say it's hurting them, because Lopez is taking at bats away from Doug Mirabelli, who sports a horrendous .186/.255/.349/.604 line this season (which is even worse if you factor in his 26 plate appearances with San Diego). Their back up had been career minor leaguer Ken Huckaby.

It's not a very significant move, but one the BoSox had to make nonetheless.

You beat me to it, XX. Baseball junkie, Boston has virtually nothing for a catcher right now.

Considering that tonight Mirabelli rolled his ankle in a play at the plate and had to leave the game after 2 innings, leaving Alex Cora as our emergency interim backup catcher.....Lopez is, at this moment, the best we've got. :(

Lopez has declined rapidly the last few seasons. I think he might be off the steroids.

Maybe, but he's also 36-years old and plays a position in which most players wear down when they reach their mid-30s, if not earlier. Not every player that declines is a steroid user; sometimes it's a natural deterioration of one's physical ability.

Guess that means get well soon, Jason. Mirabelli is still the best at catching Wake, (if not the only receiver that can consistently handle the knuckler), and just a couple short weeks ago the Yankees picked up the thirtysomething ex-Philly Sal Fasano. If the Red Sox had only known..... ah! woulda, shoulda, coulda never won a ballgame.
