Utley at 34?

On his fifth and final AB, Utley bloops the ball back to the pitcher who looks the runner down at 3rd, then fires to 1st. Utley was safe, but they weren't sure it was a hit. Well, they ruled it a hit, then during the next batter, they removed the hit from the scoreboard, as it seems they were discussing whether it was a throwing error or a hit, then they put it back on as a hit.
If you can find some replays somewhere, check it out, and see what you think.
I think it was a hit, but of course, I was rooting for him to get a hit. :D

The Phillies are clobbering the Cardinals 16-8, top of the 9th, 2 outs, and Chase Utley has a chance to get another, "cleaner" hit against Isringhausen. :)

Oh it was a hit alright. No doubt about it in my mind. Ryan Howard and Chase are the only thing we really have in Philly to cheer about right now.

I sure saw a hit both times. I can understand the controversy on the first one, but there's no question about hit #2. If there's no streak, you call that a hit without a second thought; it was a fairly solid grounder up the middle, and Miles just barely got a glove on it. Anyone who argues tomorrow that it should be over at 33 is just a bitter, pessimistic baseball fan.

I don't think there will be any argument, and I didn't hear of any question about the second hit.

Maybe not what he wanted, but definitely a hit! Can any one help on this one? Has there ever been a team that has had 2 different players in consecutive seasons have over 30 game hitting streaks? I have not been able to find an answer on this, so if any of the faithful can shed some light on this question, this newbie will be so very grateful.:noidea :noidea

I think his first hit should count. Nobody erred, if had been a routine play Pujols could have stepped on the bag even if Utley was booking and the throw was a bit off.

Interesting night for Utley, though. Nothing elevated, even foul. It seemed like he was due for a fly single, but he'll take the hot grounder off of Miles' glove.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Philadelphia's Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to 34 games when the official scorer changed his initial call and gave him an infield hit in the eighth inning of the Phillies' game against St. Louis on Wednesday night.

Utley added a single in the ninth for his fifth two-hit game in his last six games.

Utley was 0-for-4 when, with the Phillies leading 11-7, he hit a bouncer to the third-base side of the pitchers' mound. Reliever Randy Flores, a left-hander, grabbed the ball with his glove hand as his momentum carried him toward third. He briefly hesitated to check Shane Victorino, the runner off third, and then turned and threw wide and late to first.

First base umpire Adam Dowdy signaled that Pujols was off the bag, but Utley already had beaten the throw.

Rule 10.06 deals with not scoring a base hit by fielder's choice, etc. and section (d) carries the note: "This shall not apply if the fielder merely looks toward or feints toward another base before attempting to make the putout at first base."

Pretty clear from this that Utley should and did get credit for the first of his two hits last p.m. Tonight, Marquis will be twirling for the Cardinals; lotsa luck, Chase, keep it alive!

BTW, did anyone else notice Benny Santiago had a similar streak. I wonder if that's a record for a catcher?

I just noticed that on that link, Dom DiMaggio was on there for his 34 games in 1949. Who'd have thought that two brothers would crack the top 20, since Dom is tied for 14th?

The official scorebook will show a hit, he got a second hit anyway, so he is on track - but still has a long way to go to beat the record. I thought the commentators went overboard in their discussion about whther the first one was a hit or not - it was as if they were willing it to be reversed and called an error??
I am very interested in Utley's chase (pun intended :D ) considering it was Pete Rose's deeds in his hitting streak that got me interested in baseball!!
