Apparently for a couple of minor leaguers...
Talk about out of the blue!!

Guzman had no position with the Dodgers anyway. It's an okay deal which sealed the fate of Cesar Izturis in LA.

Lugo is a good, underrated player. But now we have a million infielders.

This is a horrible trade. Guzman was a frontline prospect and Sergio Pedroza is an outstanding minor league player. They should only be involved in a deal together for a good starter. To get a journeyman middle infielder that they don't even have room for in exchange for two outstanding prospects is heinous. Colletti is going to set a record for quickest depletion of a great farm system while getting crap in return. Fire him already.

can Tampa hang on to what good players they have? Huff, now Lugo

Where are the gonna find a place to play this infield?
Betemit can play 3B, SS, and 2B.
Furcal can play SS.
Lugo can play SS and 2B.
Kent can play 2B and 1B.
Nomar can play 1B without risking major injury.
None of these guys can platoon either since Furcal and Betemit are switch-hitters and Kent, Nomar, and Lugo are all righties.
Lugo doesn't fit the Dodgers needs either. They needed a slugger not a 3rd leadoff hitter behind Furcal and Lofton.

Tampa will replace 3B Huff and SS Lugo with 3B B.J. Upton and SS Joel Guzman or vice versa.
Lugo was due $4,950,000 this year and would have cost more next year. Huff was due $6,916,667 this year and would have got more next year if Tampa had wanted to hold onto him. Meaning Tampa dumped at least $11,866,667 off its payroll for 2007 and replaced it with two guys making $327,000 a year each. Freeing up $11 million lets Tampa attempt to resign its real talent like Baldelli, Crawford and Kazmir to long term extensions. It's a tough decision but I think the right one to make.
In addition I think Upton and Guzman are both about ready to come into their own as major league ball players. I wouldn't expect much of a production drop off in 2007 and I'd expect vast improvement in 2008.
Tampa might actually have someone in charge down there who knows what they are doing, amazingly.

Yet another reason why it was such a stupid trade. They traded frontline prospects for a guy that will have to be a backup/utility type. Colletti is clueless.

My gut tells me to hate Colletti because he came from the dark side. But I can't help giving him the benefit of the doubt. By all accouts, Guzman has slipped down the line as far as top prospects go. We have Kemp OF, Loney 1B, and LaRoche 3B. This can change drastically, 2 years ago the top 2 prospects the Dodgers had was Guzman and Edwin Jackson. They are both in TB now. Is TB fleecing our farm system or are we pawning off over hyped "never gonna be's" on them? That is the question. A writer for SI said Guzman is at best a Richie Sexson type, and could miss entirely.

I've been listening to my gut ever since he started making moves. Don't forget that as a part of the Giants front office he was a part of the genius trade that acquired AJ Pierzynski for Francisco Liriano, Joe Nathan, and Boof Bonser. Plain and simple, Colletti is clueless about prospects and his history shows he has no problem trading away good ones for journeyman major leaguers. I personally can't wait until the Dodgers wise up after they miss the playoffs this year and dump Colletti before he guts the entire farm system.
I agree that Guzman is overrated. But the fact that he is highly rated means they should be able to get better than a utility infielder for him. The part of the deal that really burns me up though is including Sergio Pedroza. That guy can flat out hit and will IMO end up being a better major leaguer than Guzman. Giving up one of them for just Lugo and not a pitcher is bad. Giving up both of them for just Lugo is unforgiveable.

Wow, I remember the AJ for Nathan deal, had no idea Liriano was part of that. THANK GOD they made that deal. LOL
That deal might be better than the one where the Padres sent Jason Bay and Oliver Perez for Giles. :D Although, that deal isn't as bad if OP doesn't ever get it back together.
But here's hoping that Liriano is the Giants Pedro. hahah
...Sergo Pedroza, never heard of him. What positon, what level of the minors was he at? I figured he was just a throw in.

He is an OF playing at high A ball right now. 3rd round draft pick from 2005. I think Colletti viewed him as a throw-in too, and that troubles me because as a GM he should know better. This guy had an outstanding year last year.

Good thing Colletti traded two top prospects for him...
