With all the players in the Dominican Republic, how come there are so few good catchers? Is it that unpopular to play there? A true talent could really stand out there.
And what about the black players from the US? I can't think of an African American catcher who is active, but guys like Campanella and Battey did it well. Even rarer than the "Black Ace."
Also, for all the talk of Mauer, catchers have gotten quite big. Piazza is still 6'3" and stocky, Barrett is 6'3", Pierzynski is also tall. Plus they're all doing swimmingly.
Where are the young Lo Ducas? :D
