Just when I was wondering if this guy's defense was good, as he hits a little better than Bobby Abreu. Oh well.
When is he an FA and has he signed an extension?

He turned down a 4-year, $48 mil extension from Milwaukee yesterday, so I'm sure that was the impetus that they needed to deal him. Interesting move in that they get some decent major league talent back. It's not a total white-flag move.

Wow!
That's some good talent there
Milwaukee is geared up for their run, so are the Rangers, they just got a young lost OF in Laynce Nix, a solid one in Kevin Mench and an ex-closer in Cordero, however, I still say that the Rangers got the better of the deal.

I heard a brief blurb before work that dealing Lee would be the first of a whirlwind day of trades around the bigs. Not sure what the premise was, but the voice on the box said the details of the Rangers-Brewers swap would give other teams a benchmark to work out market value of the other players that are being sought. Not too many other sluggers are out there, but there are a slew of soon to be free agents that are being offered, and every team within five games of the post season (with 55 or so to go), will be pursuing pitching, particularly relievers. Do you think Tony Gwynn Jr. will get more playing time, or is he strictly a PH/CF backup for now?

Im just glad we got read of coco...I mean he used to be pretty good but now he just fell off the deep end,I just don't understand why we didn't get another reliever in the deal.

and...Wilkerson strikes out...again :radio
What is your problem with Wilk? He has the most HR on your team! More than Teixera, sure he k's a lot, but how many times have you k'ed against 95 mph pitches?
I didn't think so, pick on someone your own "calibre", "experience" and "level"

It is difficult for me to process much info before coffee, and I am notorious for flipping through the five or so sports/blather stuff on my cable, machine gun style. I'm guessing it was espnews, because they were talking about how Soriano, Casey, Chacon, and Hawkins could all be dealt, once a big name like Lee, or Abreu is moved. Not sure if they even mentioned Texas, but they did speak to how all NL West teams are going backwards, and AL West teams are all loading up for the final assault. Other than that, there isn't a lot I remember seeing through one bloodshot eye at that ungodly hour.

Lee though a respectable hitter isn't in Abreu's class as a hitter. Lee's career OPS+ is 111 to Abreu's 138.
Neither offers much with the glove. Abreu did win a GG last year but it was a goofy award.

Mench had been sliding off the scale slowly, laynce nix is a AAA God, and Cordero is going through a rough time. Great move by the rangers, now they need one more pitcher.

Thanks. I was just looking at 2006 numbers. I've never gotten into OPS+ (or ERA+ for pitchers), but I do know that the higher the OPS+, the better.

As a Brewers fan, I looked at this and said "Oh no". This looks like a horrible trade for Milwaukee, especially if Texas resigns Lee, which the Brewers couldn't do.

Good point, although Abreu offers more of the O and Lee more of the S, which is what the Rangers have been sorely lacking this year after hitting a ton of homers last year.

Two teams trading spare parts. The fact that Lee would not sign the Brewer's $48 million offer will likely turn out extremely well for that organization, as he's not nearly worth that much money.
Mench has never played up to his potential. I'm not sure Nix is anything more than a Quad-A player. Cordero will probably get a shot as the Brewers' new closer. Turnbow seems to have squandered his opportunity. Nelson Cruz is a career minor leaguer.
Lee is either one very expensive rent-a-player or Tom Hicks, in his infinite financial wisdom, is going to over-spend on Lee in the off-season.
It is truly pathetic that with Wilkerson, Blalock, Kinsler, Young, Teixeira and formerly Mench that the Rangers needed to trade for another bat. This team should have scored 800 runs this year.

Do you think Tony Gwynn Jr. will get more playing time, or is he strictly a PH/CF backup for now?
He's still the sixth outfielder behind Gross and Hart.
I would rather the Brewers gotten some more bullpen help rather than Mench and Nix. Hart is ready to play every day.
Methinks this isn't the only move the Brewers are going to make before Monday. Mench has been involved in so many rumors for so long. I just don't think he's going to stay. Besides, the Brewers have to play Hart every day, if only to find out if he can be a contributor. And frankly, corner outfielders aren't that difficult to find.
This also has ominous consequences for Derrick Turnbow. Does Cordero come in and take over the closer's job? Or is he insurance in case Turnbow and get straightened out? Remember, Turnbow was extended earlier this year.
Finally, I am a bit annoyed about this deal for one important reason: Carlos Lee is my nine-year-old daughter's favorite player. It broke my heart to have to tell her the news this morning.

If the Rangers don't at least win the American League West this year I think it is time to show Showalter to the door.
This team is absolutely packed with offensive studs and they're all playing like slugs. Every single star position player is under-performing. When Gary Matthews Jr. is a team's best performer -- there are problems brewing that I am not even sure if Carlos Lee can fix.
In addition, the Rangers finally have depth in their starting rotation this season. The offense easily should have scored about 800 runs and this team should have dominated a weak AL West this season.
Is anybody in that organization taking responsibility for its massive failure? His overall record in three and half seasons in Texas is 290 wins and 300 losses, not exactly impressive. I realize that most people are absolutely enamored with Showalter but here is an interesting little fact about him,
Buck Showalter leaves the Yankees in 1995. The Yankees win the World Series in 1996.
Buck Showalter leaves the Diamondbacks in 2000. The Diamondbacks win the World Series in 2001.
Anybody noticing a trend?
