Tampa Bay Devil Rays vs. New York Yankees
Friday July 28 2006. 7:05 e.t.
Safeco Field. Seattle, Wash.

The Yankees usually have their way with the Devil Rays in Yankee Stadium and
don’t expect much different in this series. This is the second of three
series between the AL East rivals. The Yankees won two of three games
earlier this year in the Bronx, with the light-hitting Tampa bats going
silent. The Devil Rays scored only six runs in the three-game series. Keep
an eye on the improving New York starting pitching. Jaret Wright and Chien
Ming-Wang have been especially tough on Tampa Bay.

Why the heck would NY be playing against the D-Rays up here in Seattle?

Neutral site:noidea

Rays probably have more fans in Seattle than in Tampa;)

Since when did the Yanks and D-Rays become AL East rivals? Me thinks they'd need to get past the O's and Jays before that could happen.

Anyway, how come a thread like this isn't in either team's forum? Likely Tampa Bay's, since we've already got a Game Thread by the NYY forum.

BTW, the Yanks are hosting this in da Bronx.

Weren't the D-Rays beating the Yanks a lot last year as well?

One more reason for Randy Johnson to retire. His bullpen-killing ways are certainly not worthy of his career.

The Rays were crushing the Yanks, $170M or so down. Randy Johnson got hammered in a game much like this. Now, things evened out a bit over 19 and I think the Yanks maybe won 10 of them. OTOH the Rays were beating the Indians, Angels, etc. on their post All-Star turnaround (after Lou Piniella's baseball plan, give or take).

Of the 19 games between their fellow AL East division team, the Yanks were 8-11 against the D-Rays in 2005, unfortunately.

1st half 2005 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/schedule?team=nyy&season=2005&seasonType=2&half=1)
2nd half 2005 (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/schedule?team=nyy&season=2005&seasonType=2&half=2)

Rays always seem to play the Yanks and Sox tough...

They'd swept Florida and Arizona in their 1st half (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/schedule?team=tam&season=2006&seasonType=2&half=1). In the same 1st half against Boston, they lost 2- of 3, won 2 of 3, got swept in 4 games, then took 3 of 4. They'd also won 2 of 3 from the White Sox.

In TB's 2nd half (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/schedule?team=tam&season=2006&seasonType=2&half=2), they started on the wrong note by being swept in a 3-gamer to the Angels and being swept in a 4-gamer vs the Twins (they'd faced both Liriano and Santana in that series).

Other than taking 2 of 3 from Baltimore (one the middle game was 13-12), after the break, they haven't done very well overall, yesterday's game notwithstanding.

It's also their first win on the road in July.

I was at the game on the 29th where the yankees lost 19-5. Not only did the yankees lose but my dad got hit by a ball. I did however get a ball from batting practice. The Yanks just had a bad day. They are still a much better teem then the devil rays.
