Catcher,#23, Brian Schneider; Washington Nationals

Overview:
Brian Schneider, played for Montreal between 2000-2004; Washington Nationals
Overview: Brian Schneider, still plays for the ex-Expos in DC, Hot-Dog is better than ever, people are starting to notice his hitting ability and his sparkling defense behind the plate. Schneider has played for the Expos/Nationals for his entire career, in the offseason, he signed a 4 year contract extension that will pay him around $4 million per season.

Current season: Schneider, coming off offseason shoulder rehab, is having problems, behind the plate and in the batter's box. Following a few stints on the disabled list, Schneider is having a down season, batting just .232 with 3 HR and 33 RBI in 72 games, Schneider has just 56 hits, 17 runs scored and only 9 doubles, Schneider has had 3 consecutive seasons of hitting at least 20 doubles and that streak might end now, Schneider's fielding is still impeccable, his handling of the pitching staff is smooth as his .993 fielding percentage shows but he has struggled with runners on the basepaths, last season Schneider threw out 32 of a possible 80 baserunners, a remarkable feat that led the major-leagues, however, he has thrown out just 12 out of 46 this season and has looked shaky on dropped third strikes.

Bottom line: Schneider remains one of the top defensive catchers in major-leaue baseball, his hitting would be much more intense if he wasn't overshadowed by the vulnerable RFK Stadium.

2006 season stats.
.232 AVG; 3 HR; 33 RBI; .993 fielding percentage

Think it's worth mentionning as well that Schneider got some playing time at the World Cup for team USA. I was happy to see him get that recognition.
