I need helping finding an effective changeup grip. I can't seem to find one. Help would be appreciated.
same positions, less pressure
Here are a couple pictures of a circle change you could try.
Try variations of this grip. I would try having the thumb and index finger touching together more than these pics show, but try for yourself. The key is to have the same arm speed as your fastball. Try not to grip it to tightly in your 3 fingers.
Ideally is would have some late movment.

How old are you and how tall are you? I only ask height to get an idea of how big your hands may be.
Some younger kids, when switching to two fingers to throw a fastball stick with using three fingers for throwing the change-up. A nice introductory way to do things. As they get older things are eligible to be modified.

Try a two seem fastball grip pushing the ball all the way to the palm.

the ket to a successful change up is... letting the ball release way out in front... and to aim the pitch low.very low.!
use your two middle fingers to hold the ball.get a feel for this by moving your wrist up and down just holding the ball with your two middle fingers and thumb underneath.place the two outer fingers on the ball and move the pinky up and down the sidefor different movement.maddux taught this one to a coach i know!

I'm 15 and about 5'9''. I used palmball for awhile but it got to be too slow and hard to control.

When I work with a player who is your age I usually steer them to a variation of the circle-change that RobV showed in his post above. There are others that I use and if a player already has an effective change we work within it.

thats why the palm ball is no good..anything that rides that far back in the grip CANNOT be controoled in a consistent manner.Try my way and make a consience effort to throw the ball low and release in front.See how that goes for you

Very close to a circle-change. Basic principles apply. Correct?

it is a CIRCLE change,,but you really have to learn to control it with the thumb and middle fingers..thats why i tell the kids to just get the feel of the grip by working the ball and wrist with the middle two first..the pointer finger stabilizes the ball a bit and the pinky is moved up and down for tumble and movement..AGAIN the key is throw it hard AIM low and let it go OUT IN FRONT OF YOU

Good. I would call it a circle-change but didn't know if you would. Different people, places, etc.
I'm glad I'm a prior pitcher. That way I can go out and experiment with things and see it's effect before I teach it to others.
I've thrown a circle change for years but I have never played with pinkey placement to effect movement. It makes perfect sense of course.

Circle change seems to work for some, not for others. Possible reasons: finger length, hand size, amount of practice devoted to it, etc. If it just doesn't seem to be working, try the split finger. Just hold ball like a two-seam fastball (where seams come closest together), but spread your two fingers a bit wider apart so both fingers are outside the seams (and make sure thumb is underneath, right in the middle). Throw exactly like your fastball, same arm speed etc, good extension out in front. Ball should go slower because your fingers are spread a little wider than fastball grip (less force/momentum applied to the center of the ball). Will feel wierd at first, keep trying. With experience, you'll then be able to move your fingers a little wider apart, ball will slow down a bit more. Be careful not to get your two fingers stretched too far apart, like really on the sides of the ball. That creates chance for wrist to lock up--not good for your health. When you really get the feel of it, it can start tumbling, sink late and batter swings over it or tops it for ground ball outs.

You are going to have to figure out what is best for you. The key is to throw it with the exact same release point and motion as your FB else batters will pick up on it sooner. I usually try the circle change first, then the box or star next and variations until we get what works best for the pitcher. The ball is held a little deeper in the hand and there is a variety of finger positioning to use.
Always a good subject and in addition is whether you try to throw it for a strike in the zone or to get the batter to chase. You won't to be able to do both, but especially want them to chase as it breaks down and out/in.
