Which of these three positions are the most important?

I don't think there is any question a reliever/closer pitches an inning or two on average. You hope your starting pitcher will give you at least seven good innings. If a starting pitcher has a bad outing the game can get out of hand before the reliever ever gets in the game.

Starters pitch the most innings, therefore have the most impact, therefore are the most important.

Really, ask the starters for the Braves or Cincinnati if the closers or set up pitchers are of any importance this year. The startes for both teams have pitched well enough to have 10 to 15 more wins as a team but the bull pins have been awful!

If you don't have good starters it doesn't much matter what the relievers do. Also, it is much easier to find good relievers, particularly middle-guys, than good starters.

IMO.... the correct answer is "the one on the mound!". It doesn't matter if your starters or releif are strong if the other isn't. All it takes is one inning, batter or pitch to blow a game. You could have all the great startes on a team, but if no one can pitch the 9th inning, you'll lose. On the other hand, you could have all the great releif pitchers in the history, but with no starters, you'll lose. :crazy
This is like asking what the most important position in baseball is? My answer has always been "The one you are playing!".

That's easy. Owners and GMs are smart. They have a budget, and must divide the dollars according to which player has the most impact on winning and losing.
How much are the best starting pitchers paid? How much are the best relief pitchers paid?
There is your answer.

the most inportant pitcher is the closer because if the game is tied and the closer is pitching its all up to them

The starter!!! Its much harder to come from behind and win than it is to hold a lead.

I think the starter because if you can't get 6 or 7 innings regularly from him, you are going to spend your bullpen and it will not be able to do ita job regularly.
IMO on the Yankees, I believe it is Wang. They have found him developing into a solid starter behind Mussina and Johnson. He regularly gives them 6 or 7 innings and at times this season has been more dependable than Johnson. With all their injuries the Yanks needed to find a third start5er they could depend upon and they did.

The starter, hands down. You must rely on your starter to give a good outing. Without a good starter you are going to lose about every game of the season.
Its good to have good relivers but without starters you are in trouble.
