Ed Delahanty's last name is spelled Delehanty in "Baseball: The Early Years" by Harold Seymour. It's spelled the same way in "Pitching in a Pinch" by Christy Mathewson with John Wheeler, and if you look at Delahanty's obituary at baseball-almanac.com, it's spelled Delehanty there, too. I've asked Bill Burgess about this, but he didn't know. When did the spelling change?

The world changed with the first publication of the MacMillan encyclopedia in 1969. Since then people have been trying to get things right (not to change history but to get it right).

The simple answer is - it never changed - it was just screwed up.

From what I've read, Seymour and his wife were anything but sloppy researchers. If they had found two versions of the name, I believe that they would have tried to track down the names origin and when and if any changes were made to it. The family name may have been changed after Delahanty's death. His family may have also used both names inter-changably. Newspapers may have also. Similarly to the variations that were for the DiMaggio brothers.
