Straight Up, Red Sox fan here. Wondering what you guys think? You need a bat, we need an arm. Thoughts?

I'm not a sox fan or an Athletics fan but, no way. Manny and Papi are the faces of that Franchise. To trade him for a pitcher who they will be able to sign in the offseason is ludacris IMO. They have plenty of solid pitching. Why give away one of your two best bats for a good but "overrated" starter? I'm sure athletics fans would gladly accept Manny but, they dont have enought money to accomidate Manny.

That would be an absoultly horrible deal. Manny Ramirez gives Ortiz protection in the lineup. Without Manny, Ortiz would be walked 24/7. Also Manny is a key compenent in the Red Sox batting order who will give you 40 plus homers and 120+ RBIs each year. And Zito isnt all that special. Dont get me wrong he is a real good pitcher but he hasnt been spectacular this season. Also he is a free agent this offseason so we would only have Zito for half a season. Sure we need arms but we have been doing pretty good within our oganazation. So Zito for Manny straight up would be a terrible trade for the BoSox.

I'm afraid it would never work salary wise. No way the A's can afford Manny. And I'm not so sure I want him in the clubhouse. Seems to be a bit of a cry baby if you ask me.

There's no place for him... Manny would have to play in Sacramento until a spot opened up...... but I'd take Youkalis and Beckett for Zito....:laugh
did you mean Manny Ramirez , Manny Trillo, or Manny Sanguillen ?

Give me a break. Zito is on a contract season. Of course he's going to put the numbers. But i'm still hoping i see consistency from him, or Beane will look pretty dumb. Never, Manny for Zito, not in this life. Neither will the Red Sox give away Youk.

Soxaholic58, please don't represent Red Sox Nation. This deal would make the Sox look awful. It's terribly lopsided, and not just in terms of salary.

I would definitely do Manny Delcarmen for Barry Zito.
Beckett for Zito is the most fair deal IMO.

I wouldnt trade Manny Delcarmen either. He has been one of the BoSox most consistent pitchers in the pen. Also Beckett for Zito wouldnt be a good deal right now either because Beckett just signed a 3 year contract extension while already stated, Zito only has a half a year left.
I dont think there is many trades for Zito right now that would work out or be fair. He will be on a new team this offseason, not this midseason.

I seriously think the A's will try to resign him, rather than give him the Tejada treatment.

I would wager if Miggy had a way to return to the A's he would... not that I see him play everyday but when I do he doesn't seem to smile like he did as an A's player....

I would not pull the trigger on that one if I were the Sox and given that offer.

The A's are in the division race...Manny is the one of the faces of the Red Sox....theres no way that will ever happen

Maybe the A's can trade Ken Macha for Manny Ramirez. :laugh
(Older folks like me may remember when the A's traded manager Chuck Tanner to the Pirates for Manny Sanguillen. :D )

Plus you'd have to change your username to "Manny24" if you'd still like to be considered an A's fan. :D :p ;)
Manny can make some good plays, but I wouldn't say he's the ideal LFer. He'd be a great DH, but as mentioned earlier, Boston would never kick in a sizeable portion of his salary, so I don't see this happening.
Unless the bases were loaded, as also mentioned, Ortiz simply wouldn't have a lethal bat behind him, so his getting walked wouldn't be according to Boston's game plan (or should I say, "game-ENDING plan"). :laugh

Ha! Like you would ever see anyone on the Athletics making over ten million a year. Probably not even that. Who's the highest paid player on the A's?

Ahhh...we have 2 players currently making 11 million per year. Eric Chavez and Jason Kendall.

That's too much.
Chavez hasn't proven that he's a superstar with his bat yet, so, yeah, that's too much.
As for Kendall, he can hit, he can field, he can't hit for power and is plain overrated.
I bet you Adam Melhuse can start and put up great numbers too.
So you could've dealt Kendall for like Abreu :D
I don't know for who, but Beane could've.

Kendall brings so much more to the table than #'s in a box score. He is quickly judged by his high salary, but he has done wonders w/our young pitching staff. That's why you hardly ever see Melhuse play anymore.

Maybe Manny Delcarmen. But Dave Littlefield isn't GM of the A's.

I would not trade Barry Zito straight up for Man Ram. No way. Zito is an excellent pitcher who's a lefty while Manny is a head case. A great hitter, but a head case. He never seems to be happy with where he is playing and sits when he doesn't feel like playing.
I'll take a tried and true veteran lefty Cy Young winner who has a history of loyalty and is a clubhouse leader over an unpredictable guy like Manny. Make no mistake, the man can mash the ball like few other can, but he can't field or run the bases well, and he doesn't seem like a team guy to me.
Zito may be leaving Oakland anyway, so the point is probably moot, but that's my opinion. I think Zito is a more valuable team player than Ramirez.

If I am the A's I would make that deal if I could afford. I've got pitchers. What I need are real hitters. Manny is starting to show the early signs of offensive decline. The killer is $20M for one player who is a defensive liability. He'd have to DH.
