Looking for some knowledegable help here. My son has been having trouble getting solid contact while hitting. He usually drives the ball on a line up the middle or to the left side. Here lately though he is consistently hitting line drives that just die before they leave the infield. Although I do not have any live pitching video on hand (I will before the week is out) I do have some video of his drill work at home. If anything in these clips jumps out at you let me know.

Dear Cartersball:
I am NOT a hitting guru, so I am not going to comment on how to improve his swing. I am replying only because I find that when looking at my own son's videos, I do not see things that when other people see the video, just leap out at them, and I go "why didn't I see that?". So here's what another set of eyes saw:
1. Sometimes his head is coming up just before contact.
2. His right elbow tends to tuck in hard and get more forward than his hands. Bat drag?

The swing looks pretty good ... maybe a little loopy, but nothing major for a kid his age. Is it possible that he's tired? And therefore possibly not taking strong swings and hitting through the ball?
Before messing with his mechanics, which look pretty good, maybe try a slightly lighter bat.

Good looking kid. Two things:
1. He needs to keep his head in there a little longer. You see him topping the ball off the tee a lot.
2. Tell him to smile!

From the rear view it looks like on a few of the swings he is hitting the outer half of the ball; instead of staying short and hitting the inner half.
I also looks like the bat is too heavy for him. He can choke up a little.
Remember he is still young, and it might not be anything with his swing but approach. Is he swinging at strikes, is he being aggressive in good hitting counts? Is he always hitting with 2 strikes?

He is an arm swinger.
If contact is what you want ,leave him alone to enjoy himself. If power is what you seek he has to learn to use his body to swing. He has a disconnection from his torso to his shoulders so all his turning from the waist down, although it looks good, adds nothing to his swing.
To start with imagine your body locked in position and turn as a unit towards the ball. When you get to a position half way to contact you unlock the body and explode onto the ball. The hands cannot initiate the swing, the body must. The body must also be in the right position for the bat to be in the right swing plane.
This is a very basic description of what is needed for a powerfull swing. If there is a search function on this board do some research on loading, posture, forming the box and rotation. There is a lot of information in these threads, you just have to look. The best discussions come from ohfur, ssarge, englishbey, hiddengem dmac Mark h swingbuster and guerry. Read all of them and pick out the information you need.
Have fun

hold the ball like a curve and snap the opposite way (of a curve) for a screwball, I wouldn't advise it though considering it can really mess up your arm

I'm having the same problem - but it's not anything recent. Sometimes, I hit the nicest hits, in practice my hitting is unbelievable, but I hit weak fly balls or line drives that die into outs to the Second Baseman (my pull side).
