Hi,
On the web there is controversy regarding ‘scapula’ loading to swing a bat and an archer pulling on the bow string to ready an arrow for flight. For more information on this topic, please see setpro.com (i.e., http://www.setpro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5280). To help resolve this issue, I have video taped myself shooting an arrow (http://www.sdlightning.org/movie/archer.html)

In the video, I am using my fingers to pull and release an arrow. In contrast, many archers now use a release device to pull the bow string and release an arrow. In regards to the debate mentioned above, it is assumed fingers are used. I developed my form under an instructor at UCSD, he was at one time highly ranked as an Olympic archer. I’ve been shooting for about 15 years. I use both a recurve and a compound bow.

Comments are welcome.
Thanks,
SDiego

Good question.
I think you would have gotten a lot more hits, through, with a more appealing thread title. =)

Your link to your archery clip doesn't open.
I would think that scapula abduction would tend to rotate the hands/fingers more backwards towards the dorsal midline/ into the armpit area, and out of the direct (acromial?) line of the shoulders.
It seems that I would want to pull the bowstring in a line directly back, in line with the arrow, parallel to the shoulder line.
I'm not sure of the precise anatomical definition, but this seems to be more external rotation around the back shoulder joint, rather than scapular loading, and the arm/hand/fingers are pulled back as a result of this external rotation.
If you pull them further back around, like in hitting, then the rear scapula would be more involved.

Hi,
You are correct, the link does not work in my first post. Try this link http://www.sdlightning.org/movie/archer.html. The video is a .wmv file and may not work if you don't have window media player installed.

I'll try to correct the link in my earlier post.

Thanks,
Sam

From post number 3 on the Setpro thread.

The challenge..(is)..to choose which movement is more representative of pulling a bowstring and which movement is more representative of swing a bat.....
