The Legends are not pleased for the Hard Cider. However, the Legends, after much soul searching, discussion among myself, and stat review, will make the second pick in the 1963 Rookie draft Jim Ray Hart.

Good pick, Lew. You get 5 good years from him... more value than from the bigger names.
Good job Lew... Jim Ray was my #2 guy as well, and we both have entrenched 3Bmen. Talk about a HOF career gone south; anyone know what happened to him after '68?
catcher24
07-13-2006, 06:59 PM
Yeah, that's the way I figured it, Mac. His OBP isn't much below my other choice, and his slugging is better. He'll be an outfielder for me, though. No way with his fielding will he displace Santo at third! I checked to make sure he plays the outfield every year from 64 through 68.

I'm here, I'm here...pick will come. I wanted Hart! I was hoping he'd slip down because he's not a big name. His production through '68 is much better than a guy like Morgan. Pick coming up....

You're right... chickens and hatching and stuff... I'll let everyone know when the time comes. But Bunker is going to be hard to pry from Mac, who now has a starting rotation in '64 to statistically match mine. Five of the top ten pitchers in ERA+ in the AL, and three of the top ten in the NL, a full 8 of 20, belong to Mac and myself.
catcher24
07-13-2006, 08:53 PM
And that completes the Legends first three rounds. I think I did OK. Got a big bat good for five seasons (Hart); a starting second sacker good for six (Hunt); a pitcher with five good to excellent seasons (John); another pitcher with three decent seasons (Culp); a SS who will start for five seasons (Alley); and an outfielder with four good to very good years (Staub).
Glad to see your pics are up, Lew!

Guys with bad K/BB ratios seem to not fare as well in DM as they did in real life. Especially in a league like this, with better than average hitters at almost every spot in the order.

You might surprise me in '64 but honestly, I think from '66 to '68 I'll be playing for the Wild Card. I made a gross error (not that it mattered in the long run); I had Tommy John down for the 1964 draft! He'd have obviously made my top grade.

--ERA and ERA+ are not always the best indicators of success for pitchers in DM. As Chris mentioned regarding Bunker, guys who were hit/run lucky generally won't be as successfull in DM. Hits/HR per IP and k/BB are more important than ERA.

Question on Joe (though it won't change my mind on picking him): He sat out the 1965 season... so would I get him through 1969, or still just through '68?

You mean he has a poor K/BB ratio, so he might not pitch so well?
Bill James did a study in his New Historical Abstract, found Bunker's '64 was the most "hit lucky" pitcher season ever, meaning his ERA components were bad, but his ERA was nonetheless good because of the defense behind him stopped a lot of hits. That's what I think he meant anyway.
catcher24
07-13-2006, 09:03 PM
But looking at Bunker, his WHIP in 64 is excellent - 1.04. I think he may do OK. And he only gave up 17 HR, so he didn't have a lot of men on base and didn't give up the long ball when he did.

His WHIP is awesome because he was so "hit lucky". The HR allowed rate is nice, though.

Looks like you beat me to the punch.
Don't worry about the pitchers--there'll be some letdowns and surprises but the truly great seasons (like Aguirre and Koufax) have shined. Which is why as soon as I traded for Chance and Horlen (from Mac oddly enough) I immediately targeted '64.
Mac, to be able to lose those two, then Mantle in FA, and still do this is great work. After observing this for a while I truly think you're the best GM we have in a cap environment.
OK, signing off for real this time...

I have a problem. I have a mammoth, absolutely monstrous year coming up from one of my starting pitchers (Bob Friend), and the rest of my team is going to be mediocre at best. Whatever am I to do? It sure would be nice if somebody could help me out with my problem...

Legends on the clock. The Knights officially pass on their remaining draft picks (I wasn't even sure there would be a 3rd rounder who could make the team). Anybody else who is done drafting please post to that effect also. A few teams still have multiple roster spots to fill and we don't want the draft to run out of time for them.

JW, thanks for the compliment. You sure got the better of me in the Mantle deal. Although it would have been worth it if only the Mick hadn't choked in the '61 playoffs.

I actually had Santiago as mynext pick, then Gatewood, then Willie Smith. So those last three picks wiped out all but a couple of the guys on my list, and I guess there really aren't any I'm very concerned about. I would have taken Gatewood sooner, but I was a bit concerned about the IP and I needed a starter next year so I took Lopez. Wish I had gone with Santiago, though. BTW, Scott, nice pickup on Smith. He must have been the last player to cover an everyday position but still pitch that much. Useful both ways in 1964.

--This draft provides some immediate help, but where its going to really look good is when it hits free agency in 1969.
Great players
Rose, Morgan, Allen. Lolich and Petrocelli (his 1969 was awesome)
Very Good
Wynn, John, Staub, Horton, Carty, Buford and Cardenal
Denny McLain wins the CYA in 1969, but then his career implodes
catcher24

Agreed. I actually anticipate Morgan's highest value will come in his second Fa contract, which will likely cover the years 74 through 78. He'll bring huge $$$$ then. Allen, Lolich, Rose and Petrocelli will probably bring the biggest bucks the first time they hit the FA market. And McLain might not get the huge $$$, unless someone is willing to pay a lot for one great year.
The Skipjacks will take infielder Dick Green.

Well, guess that makes it my turn. The last six picks pretty much wiped out my list. The only two left worth anything at all (IMHO) are John Bateman and Sam Bowens, but I won't be taking either one, so I guess I'm done now as well.

Not bad picks (Powell and Calmus) if you were still looking for some relief help in 63. I already have two pitchers in the minors who had their best seasons in 1963 but won't be on my 25 man roster, so I didn't look at "one year" relievers. But those guys will give you some backup in case someone else should get hurt.
