All I know is that Cap Anson questioned the integrity of the 5-game series in late September. Boston was in the midst of an 18-game winning streak. The League found no conclusive evidence of duplicity and officially awarded the pennant on November 11. The Beaneaters were only 20-21 in early June, but went on a tear for the rest of the year due in part to adjustments in pitching assignments. Clarkson usually started against the ace of the opposition on whichever day that happened to fall and wasn't very consistent as a result. Manager Selee smartly put him on a regular turn rotation instead. In any case, Boston went on a .695 winning pace. Boston won 23 out of 30 games in September.

According to Harold Kaese, "There were rumors after this series, because Ewing had not publicized the extent of the New York injuries. The defeats of the Giants looked phony to the suspicious, and especially to those with money on Chicago."
