The Sox are, of course, a fearsome offensive machine. They have three guys on pace to hit 40 to 60 homeruns this year. Crede is on pace to hit 30. Gooch and Juan are on pace to hit 20+ apiece. The only regular starter not hitting .280 level ball is Uribe and he's hot as a firecracker now so thats not comforting to an opposing pitcher now. Even Anderson has his swing down and has been getting a lot of hits, including some gappers. The only starter they have without legitimate home run power is Posednik. And even the bench can hit well. In fact its the best all around bench in MLB.
The Sox are leading MLB in runs per game, and probably home runs as well. Only the Dodgers and Toronto have a better team BA%. They are currently 57-31 for a .648%. So why is there cause for worry?
I dont think its defense to worry about. It was for awhile but they appear to have gotten over the hump and are playing better ball. The addition of Andersen actually hitting the ball is huge because he is an awesome defensive CF. The Sox simply have to keep him in CF.
But If their pitching doesn't straighten out they are going to have big problems, most of all starting pitching. First off they have to sit out, or trade, Vazquez and let McCarthy rotate in his spot. McCarthy earned it last year and he will never jell as a reliever. The kid is a starter! While were at it Garland and Garcia haven't exactly had stellar years either. There is no answer to that other then they play better or we dont repeat.
The Bullpen looks far better then I thought it would. Jenks is Jenks, Cotts is looking like the Cotts of old, Thornton is pitching way better, the Riske pickup was huge, HUGE! Its a comfort having McCarthy there when Garland is getting shelled in the 4'th or 5'th. And now if only Politte comes around.......The bullpen is starting to look like a WS,WS bullpen.
So...we want the World Series again???? It comes down to starting pitching. Its that simple!
