Florida is not a baseball state... But there is tons of people in Florida.

SOUTH Florida is not great for baseball. If the Marlins could get a clue and realize that the majority of their season ticket holders (the few they have left) live in Palm Beach and Broward counties--with a strong runner up in St. Lucie County (hour and a half north of the stadium) and move the stadium NORTH they might have a chance. There is planty of land to build and the fan base is obviously already there. But the powers that be insist on putting the stadium further south---heck any closer to the Keys and I am watching the game on the boat while fishing for Marlin!!! =)

South Florida not great for baseball? What? Its great, its just the majority of fans cant afford to spend $100(which is what it costs nowadays, unless your watching the game alone with no food) to watch a game, people here feel betrayed being that their entire team was traded away twice, (1998,2006). Also the weather a problem. During the summer you look up the weather report and theres a 70% chance of rain almost everyday.

Oh please, those were some pretty lame excuses. Are you saying the South Florida is the poorest baseball community in the US? Because people in other cities still seem to be able to come up with the cash to go everywhere else... KC fans dont go because their team is terrible, not because they cant afford it. Plus, ive gone to about 10 games this year and not once did i pay 100$

Weather a problem also?? Shea was full when a weekend series against the Giants and bad weather written all over it...So is Fenway, so is Wrigley, and so is Camden.

Your only good point was about the team being traded away, that definately valid.

Maybe another could be that the stadium isnt anything you want to get off your couch for....

Maybe they should start something like the Toonie Tuesday like the Jays have. $2 for a ticket every home game the Jays play on Tuesdays and they also give free pizza to every fan when a pitcher has 7 or more K's.

I think they could give tickets away and people still woulnt come, its just a Football and Basketball type of town. This team is good though, and has a top five MVP canidate in Cabrera IMO, but the owner, Loria, complete moron, it's sad, but thats....for another thread.

At one point the Marlins did do this free donuts thing. If the team had 12 or more hits everyone can redeem their tickets for a dozen donuts, although they were "select" Krispy Kreme stores. I heard there was only 1 or 2 shops participating. Thats bad planning. Imagine over 15,000 fans standing in line in 2 different shops for a free dozen! I'm not sure though so don't quote me

The Toronto Raptors (ya I know off topic but w/e) had a similar giveaway as the donuts if they scored 100 or more points you go to any Pizza Pizza store and give in your ticket and get a free slice of pizza.

How about because everytime you guys have a good team your owner has a firesale? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, just kick me in the head! I deserve it!
Why should fans show up knowing that it's just a matter of time before Dan Uggla, Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis get picked off the roster like someone selecting chocolates from a box of Whitmans.
When I was a kid, I was a Mets fan and then watched Donald Grant get rid of all the guys I rooted for. Then, he trades Tom Seaver to the Reds because he didn't want to cough up the cash and pay the man what he was worth. Criticize George M. IIIrd all you want. He puts a heck of a team on the field every year, is a marketing genius and had the foresight to start his own network. This filled his already overstuffed pockets but guess what? He puts it back into the team every year. Despite his business savvy, I actually believe that he believes all of this Yankee tradition and mysticism.

I´m amazed at their poor attendance, Florida seems to me like a great place for baseball.

After watching a game there Saturday I'm not convinced 20,000 were in attendance. The park looked more like 12 or 14,000. Looking at the final game attendance from Sunday..NO way were there 36,000 plus. The place was near empty as seen on TV.

Whomever doesn't live down here cannot understand why people don't go to the games. It's not only one factor, but there are several of them. I am going to call them out but mind you, don’t pay attention to the order I put them because like I said is a combination of them. As a matter of fact, the last point I make is the one that weights the most.
1)Like somebody said before is really expensive for the average Joe to go to the stadium. Parking is 10 bucks, a decent ticket costs anywhere from 25 to 35 dollars and then chicken wings and fries, with a Coke, is a whopping 11 bucks. On top of that, a beer is like 8 dollars. So, a trip to the stadium will be anywhere from 45 to 55 dollars a person. Like most of you know, Miami is the second poorest city in the States. Believe me, there are a lot of people down here who cannot spend 50 bucks to go to the stadium and watch a baseball game, that’s a fact.
2)The weather is really bad and it rains every single day during the better part of the season. Yes, it rains in other MLB cities but not every single day there’s a downpour of an inch at 3 or 4 pm. Sometimes it’s 30 minutes before game time and is still raining. Can somebody tell me if in their MLB cities this happens as well? Does it rain EVERY SINGLE DAY? I mean, is not that we are fair weather fans, but when it rains every day one gets discouraged to go because nobody likes sitting through a lengthy rain delay when has to go to work the following day.
3)The latter point brings me to my third point. Whomever’s been to the stadium knows that it is located in the border of Miami and Broward. For folks in all of Miami-Dade County, but those in the north-northwest, and for those in north Broward or West Palm Beach is a long trip to get to the stadium. Here in South Florida public transportation is non-existant and there are no subways or a good public transportation system that take fans to the stadium. Believe me, if we had a bus system or subways leading to the stadium, I guarantee you that in average 5,000 people more would show up to the games. It takes me 30 minutes with no traffic to get home from the stadium. However, for a 7:05 pm start I would have to go from my job to the stadium because there’s no way I am getting to my house from work and then head out to the park and get there in time to watch the entire game. Believe me when I tell you that the gloomiest thing is the following scenario: You want to go and catch the game at the stadium but when you get out of work is raining. Now, you can think that’s going to stop raining but then you realize that because the traffic is so bad because of the rain there’s no way you can go home and then go to the game because you’ll get there late. So, you have to go straight from work to the stadium. In the middle of a gigantic traffic jam you watch the rain coming down hard and you realize you have to go to work tomorrow and it might be 11 pm by the time you can go to bed, after getting drenched by maybe passing showers during the game. So, what would you guys do? I can bet that 90% of you would take the freeway home and watch the game in the comfort of your couch.
4)We have a lot of things to do in town.
5)We have a lot of transplant people here who don’t root for the Marlins.
6)Emotional investment on the team. This is the most important factor, even though the other points I explained before are almost are important as this one. This is also something that hits us really hard. I mean, Phillies fan know Chase Utley’ll be terrifying the Marlins for many years to come. Ryan Howard will be hitting 500 with 10 homers in 19 games against the Marlins for also a lot of years. Mets’ fans will be cheering on Carlos Beltrán and Carlos Delgado for the length of their contracts. What can we count on? We don’t know if the D-Train will be here next year. We can be almost sure that Miggy’ll be here next year but there’re no guarantees after the ‘07 season. Who knows whether Hanley Ramirez’ll be here for a long time? Who’s to say that Scott Olsen, J.J. or Anibal Sanchez will be part of the starting rotation for the years to come? We’ve been through two fire sales in less than 7 years. I mean, when you see the likes of Moises Alou, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Sheffield, Liván, Rentería and many others being shipped away you get really upset and loose interest in the team. Like I said, I am a die hard fan and I would even follow the team during the ’98 campaign with the likes of Dunnwoody patrolling CF for the team. The Marlins got really good but they again tore apart the team this year. I mean, the players fought hard and they played really well in '06 (thanks to Beinfest, a genious in my opinion when pulling trades and getting value in return) but it could’ve been ’98 all over again.

I get really upset when I hear or listen to people saying that we’re a whole bunch of fair wheather fans. I mean, I understand why somebody would say something along those lines, you just have to look at the stands and watch 5 or 6,000 people in attendance. However, there are a whole bunch of factors and I think once they build the retractable dome stadium, I hope is soon, we’ll see more people in the stands. For those of you who do not know, the Marlins do extremely well in TV ratings, so there are plenty of people following the games. I think this town can thrive in attendance, did somebody notice 67000 people in attendance for all the playoffs games?, once the stadium issue gets solved.

All that is true.
What we need is a stadium, I mean its either 90 degrees with 100% humidity or its raining.
Also, hasn't the state given stadiums to other franchises less deserving like, the magic, the jaguars, the devil rays, and the bucaneers? Not to mention 2 hockey teams, I mean I like hockey, a little, but when I think of Florida, hockey's not there

Miami-Dade County, for starters, has a lot more population than Broward and Palm Beach counties. The team's season-ticket base is slightly higher in Miami-Dade than it is in Broward. Of the three counties, season tickets are by far the lowest from Palm Beach County. So the bulk of the fan base, at least from season tickets sales, is Miami-Dade and Broward, and that's with a stadium in the north part of Miami-Dade County. To directly answer your question, Broward has shown zero interest in working with the Marlins on a new stadium. These deals take time, and for the past few years, the Marlins have talked to the cities of Miami and Hialeah, in Miami-Dade.

Of course that the majority of season ticket holders live in Palm Beach, St Lucie and Broward.... only because they are three counties and Miami-Dade is only one county. Even so, Dade county accounts for 40% of the season ticket holders the team has. The Marlins have always played in Dade County and I would love for them to stay in Miami for two reasons. One, the team has almost as many fans in this county than the other three combined and a stadium in Hialeah or Downtown Miami would be a very good place location wise for the two major counties the team draws from, Dade and Broward, (Hialeah's slightly better than Downtown Miami's though. Hialeah's will be easier to access via freeways, Downtown Miami's access via freeways will not be as good, but not really bad though, but it would have better access from a public transportation point of view). Also, politicians in this county at least have stepped up to the plate and have put moneys forth to build the stadium. Politicians in the other counties have turned their backs to the team.

As much as I would like the Marlins to remain in Miami, I find those attendance number unacceptable for a MLB team.
I believe Tennessee should get a baseball team, if the state can support NHL, NBA and NFL team they can support a baseball besides Country always makes me think about Baseball.

Kind of a telling point when UM baseball will out draw the Marlins.

People haven't forgotten what Ol' Baldy (thanks, Neil Rogers) did after '98.

Really makes fans want to come when you do salary dumps. Guess Vargas was going to make too much $$$...

When that swine Fidel Castro finally dies and goes to join Stalin, Hilter and Mao in hell, hopefully the citizenry of Cuba will be able to renounce communism and the door would be open for the Marlins to move to Havana. I think it would be exciting for people that have such a passion for baseball to have a MLB team, plus the good fans in Miami could still follow the team on tv & radio, plus an occasional fun weekend visiting the island and seeing them live. No doubt Cuba will again become a tourist mecca. MLB will add to the fun. I would hope they would allow cigar smoking in the park.:)

Doesn't matter where they move. As long as they have a cheapskate owner like Loria, they'll still put out an inferior product.

That will be awesome, but it will never happen. What can end up happening is that MLB expands and the league awards a team to Havana.
If the fish move to Havana though, they can count on a lot of people, not only from Miami but from the rest of the USA, that will atend the games.

I don't think Loria has been that bad of a owner, he's a cheapskate but at least he's given us hope and has made very prominent signings. Oh, he's also given us a championship.

Maybe they should play 41 games in Miami and 40 games in Havana, or something along those lines, maybe 60 in Miami and 21 in Cuba. It defindently comes down to Cuba's political state and relations with the U.S, but I can say for sure that Cuba's very passionate about baseball and if they do in fact paly some games there I will for sure go down there once in a while, visit relatives and watch some Miami-Florida-Havana-Cuba Marlins baseba;;:clapping
