Hello Browns fans! I'm a newcomer to your site. I've had the great experience of meeting and becoming a close friend with Arthur Richman (Senior VP Yankees), who is the #1 Browns fan. Arthur turned 80 on March 21 of this year, & unfortunately has been in poor health since. His days as a Browns fan began when he was 10 years old, along with his brother, Milton (who is in the writers wing of the Baseball HOF). They would stand outside Yankee Stadium hoping to see the players. The mighty Yankees would not give the kids the time of day. However, Harland Clift, the Browns 3rd baseman, took the kids into the park & even the clubhouse, & that's where Arthur's career in baseball began. He travelled with the Browns on the trains, & eventually worked his way up in the organization. When they became the Orioles, he became a sportswriter with the New York Mirror, then in the early 1960's, George Weiss asked him to work for the Mets. He did this until George Steinbrenner hired him in the late 1980's. He was responsible for the hiring of Joe Torre. He is the most interesting man, & has some amazing stories. For more interesting reading about Arthur, the Baseball Digest (July 2001) has a great story on him. Please keep Arthur in your prayers, & hope for improved health.
Best Regards,
John S.

long time new york baseball man arthur richman died today as reported by wfan.
the one-time associated press baseball writer (his brother milt was the ap sports editor) was with the mets for 25 years as promotions director and later traveling secretary moved to the yankees in 1989 as senior vp and consultant.

he was one of the last of the st. louis browns fans from his childhood, was also the inside force in the yankees hiring of joe torre. proably knew more people in baseball than anybody else in this era, George Brett named his second son “Dylan Richman” so that Arthur would have someone to carry on his name.

i had a chance to know him over the years and he was a genuine, giving man.

Arthur Richman wasn't on our list of former Browns, but he should've been. No one ever loved the Browns more than he and fellow Bronx street urchin, brother Milton. It all started, as many of you know, when members of the '44 Browns club befirended the boys on trips to New York with kind attention that the home town Yankee players didn't have time to give their young fans.

The result was a conversion of two New York boys into Browns fans for life.

I was privileged to meet Arthur Richman through the Browns Fan Club. We became friends, as did just about everyone else who ever met this good, loyal, and blow-your-mind baseball-knowledgeable man. It seemed as though you couldn't bring up any player that ever reached the big leagues that he didn't know something about.

We'll miss you, Arthur. And so will baseball. People of your quality don't show up everyday. In my belief system, you're now reunited with your brother Milton - and all those other former players, especially Browns, who left the planet ahead of you.

Enjoy the heavenly baseball talk, old friend, and save a place at the banquet table for the rest of us who are still down here doing what we can to save up for the trip.
