I think Dave Duncan might be suffering from Rick Honeycutt disease.

cmon this was a very good trade!!!! We pretty mutch got him him for a carrer minor leaguer!!!!the upside is very good to this trade. maybe a stint in NL can revive him like it did to bronson arroyo.

my gut feeling is that this isn't going to work. weaver is another 4th/5th starter type who won't pitch deep into games, putting more stress on a bullpen that already looks gassed. plus, he's just one more starter whose contract is up at the end of the season, so there's no long term help here. but something has to be done if this team wants to play in october and you have to give jockety credit for making the move.

I thought Weaver signed for a 2-year deal with the Angels?

He's an innings eater, but most of the time, he can barely make it out of the fourth. He's pitched way better in the NL (see last year in LA) than he has in the AL.

I was hoping that the Nationals would trade for him. It's true about his success being better in the N.L. He allows alot of flyballs and homeruns(35 last year with L.A.) which would have made him perfect in cavernous R.F.K. Stadium. His stats have never been overwhelming but he's been a very servicable major league pitcher with some great stretches. Hopefully he can show some of his former ability in St.Louis

redbird central reported that he had signed a one yr/8.3 mil contract with the angels in the offseason (and god knows that if it's reported on the internet it has to be true:laugh ). anyway, i've seen some stats today that makes me feel a little better about this deal (his k/bb ratio is pretty good, quality starts were okay, and, yes, his nl stats are much better than his al stats).

Tonight Weaver will pitch for the first time as a Cardinal against the Braves at Busch stadium. We will see...

Should be interesting. Hopefully he pitches well, but if he doesn't it won't be a huge bust.

Well, I just read this article:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AuHcFSjfLQEjC4vbGzaVzroRvLYF?slug=ap-cardinals-weaver&prov=ap&type=lgns

The key for Cardinal fans from this article is this quote by Tony La Russa:

"We have confidence he's going to be good for us," La Russa said. "So, he's in the rotation."

Ponson is out and what that immediately says is that this is not an experiment, he's going to be with the team as the 5th starter. Ponson first half, Weaver second half.

My hands are clasped together in prayer.

He's going to be just as good as any other option they have, but they need to acquire someone with the ability to be a top of the rotation starter if they want to go anywhere in the playoffs.

they have a top of the rotation guy in carpenter-what they're missing is a number two starter (you can even argue that they're missing a number three starter as well :( ). hopefully, mulder comes back healthy and has time to get himself in shape for an october run. he's your number two guy. if he doesn't come back pitching like he should, we're in serious trouble. but that still won't solve the problem this team has had scoring runs in the post season.

I meant that we need a pitcher that's at the level of Carpenter or Mulder that can pitch either in between them or after Mulder, depending on how Mulder will pitch. Now, finding this pitcher and not giving up way too much for him is the real challenge.

i agree with all of that. i heard a nice colby rasmus for the D-train rumour last night. that would fit the bill.
