First Ruth as the third best player of the 1920's and now Grove behind Hubbel??? any justification
Actually......................
Although I can't speak for his Ruth ranking;), I honestly feel Hubbell can be justified... Although I had him #2 on my list, I could have easily swap the 2 in order... Now obviously Grove is the better of the 2 for career #'s, which is the determining factor that gave him the push to #1 for me but their 190's #'s are both great and very, very close...
I'm a hard stats guy so thats what I look at.. Not that there is anything wrong with the other stats presented here, thats just me.. So here are my hard stats for Hub and Grove for the 30's: Note: decade rankings in ( )
Wins:
Grove: 199 (1)
Hub: 188 (2)
WHIP:
Grove: 1.24 (4)
Hub: 1.12 (1)
ERA:
Grove: 2.91 (2)
Hub: 2.71 (1)
Strikeouts:
Grove: 1337 (1)
Hub: 1281 (3)
Innings Pitched:
Grove: 2399.0 (4)
Hub: 2596.7 (1)
Complete Games:
Grove: 197 (3)
Hub: 197 (3)
K's Per IP:
Grove: 4.93 (7)
Hub: 4.44 (10)
Shutouts:
Grove: 26 (4)
Hub: 31 (2)
So Grove being #1, IMO, is not as much of a no brainer as one may think...

Now do you know the league era in Hubbels time was 3.86
Grove's league had an era of 4.54
A better judgement therefore is ERA+
Grove- 219,190,185,185,176,160,159,158,134,74
Hubbel- 193,169,168,149,143,140,122,122,121,118
As you can see Grove easily had better era's when put into context. Hubbel only had 1 better era year while Grove had 9 better.
Grove won more games 199-188 for Hubbel
Grove had more K's 1337- 1281 for Hubbel
Grove was still able to win 5 WHIP titles to Hubbel's 6 WHIP but keep in mind that Grove pitched in extreme hitters park in Shibe and Fenway. So thats actually skewed.
Grove won 7 era titles in the 30's while Hubbel won 3.
Grove led the league in Shutouts 3X while Hubbel did so once.
Grove's team won 3 pennants and 2 championships.....Hubbel's 3 pennants and 1 championship.
Grove was also valuable to his team while pitching in relief.
159 games
55 SV'S
377.2 IP
340 H
8.1 H/9
33-22 W-L
2.84 ERA
153 BB
3.53 BB/9
243 K'S
5.8 K/9
In the 1929 WS pitching only in relief he went 6-1/3 innings allowed no runs had 2 SV's and struck out 10.
Thats a little known fact about Grove. He was arguably the best starting pitcher and arguably the best releiver in his day.
Hubbel is a clear cut # 2 but no way is he better than Grove.

To me Mose and King Carl were far and away the top 2 no matter how you look at it. It seems everyone agrees with that statement so far. We can use statistics ad infinitum to argue which one is number 1.
By the way, in the 30's Grove only won 2 pennants.

That's not a very significant factor. In the 1910's, Walter Johnson won zero pennants.
Hubbell had a great decade, but he fell short of Grove.

I do not claim it was a significant factor and I ranked Grove No. 1. But a previous post said he won 3 pennants in the 30's. I was setting the record straight.
