How could anybody in good conscience vote for the cowardly rightfielder who can neither field very well or hit in the clutch? Abreu should not be allowed within 10 miles of the All Star site.

No need for that.... Why come in here and try to start something like that..Bobby does deserve to be there, just not as much as Nomar does, voted for him.

Unless you are a bona fide major leaguer yourself, you really have no right to call a ballplayer a coward....have you ever stood in against major league pitching or ran full tilt after a fly ball close to the wall....walk a mile in the shoes before you run your mouth off...

Yea Bobby has the BEST OBP in all the Major leagues

He may not be great defensively or a HR threat...but he is the perfect leadoff hitter

Too bad he bats 3rd

Last year the stupid home run battle ruined him almost the whole second half. Keep him home, we need him in the line-up, hitting dingers.

Ah, well, he lost out to Nomar.....not sure if that was the right choice...Nomar has the better batting average (.359 vs. .286) and has a couple of more homers, but Bobby has scored more runs ( 53 to 51), has 8 more rbis (57 to 49), has many more walks (78 to 26), far more stolen bases, and a better on base percentage, plus he is a gold glover at his position, Nomar is just learning a new one...don't think he belongs as a first baseman..

What, you said at the begining that Bobby didnt belong anywhere near the All star game, now you say he should have and Nomar shouldnt have? Make up your mind. Waffler.:coffee

no, if you go back and check the earlier posts on this thread, you'll see that it was Johnny Thinslow who said that Bobby didn't belong anywhere near the allstar game - I am a stauch, unflinching supporter of Bobby - never would have said that - I am the one who started the thread to get the votes in..

O yes, so so sorry, I'm dumb, I think you could make a case for both Bobby Abreu and perhaps Pat Burrell.:)

Lets stop using the HR Derby as an excuse for his lack of power at the end of last year and throughout this year. Maybe he is just declining? Just a theory...

Actually, as a card carrying coward, I have every right (according to your logic) to call Abreu a coward, but it does not take one to know one. Abreu's cowardice in right field has been well documented. When a man shies away from walls as frequently as Abreu does, he is clearly afraid of them. In Abreu's case, he is very afraid of them. Therefore, the Gold Glove he received makes the award meaningless, and his liability in the field means he is not an All Star. Garciaparra was much more deserving.

Also, if it is true that a person has to have been "walking a mile in" someone's "shoes before running" his "mouth off," then everybody who has not been a president cannot criticize one. And unless a person has been a broadcaster, he cannot criticize Chris Wheeler. In fact, your logic says that I cannot criticize Charles Manson since I have never engaged in mass murder. In fact, I cannot sit on a jury unless I have actually committed the crime a person has been charged with and been victimized by the same type of crime. Ultimately, everybody on this forum who has either praised or blamed the Phillies should cease at once unless that person has actually played for the Phillies. Or have I misunderstood your point?

Its fair to criticize, of course, but you go beyond that when you attack the character of the person...it is fair to criticize the action of the president, of course, but not his personal character, unless you really know him...mass murderers, trials...these things are not what we were talking about...there are rights and wrongs as determined by ones society/lawmakers...a person has a right to trial by his peers, and is, of course, innocent until proven guilty...if you think Abreu should get to more balls, or is misplaying them, well then say so, but don't judge his character...perhaps you have not taken the time to really see how effortless his play looks..he has amazing natural talent...kind of like Ali, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee....

Garciaparra was much more deserving.

I take issue with this....he has always been overrated...funny how the Red Sox didn't win until they got rid of him, isn't it...their GM woke up and realized he had to get a short stop who could play some defence.and turn the double play ....Orlando Cabrera was the main reason they got that world series...Garciaparra has won nothing...,
and like I said before, its a joke...the guy is still learning his position, how the h##l can he be an all star at it yet? probably the same as when he played SS, the stats won't tell the story because he doesn't get to a lot of the balls he should get to, even at first base....guy should be a DH in the AL

In Abreu's case, it is not possible to separate his character from the quality of his play. When he floats toward the wall, he ends up not catching the ball. Why doesn't he catch it? Because he floats when he should be running. Why does he float rather than run? What other reason could there be? He doesn't want to get hurt. He is afraid of getting hurt. What name do we give to a ballplayer who exhibits fear?

To compare Abreu to an Ali is misleading; Ali's "floating" was a metaphorical description of a great boxer with enormous courage. Abreu exhibits courage neither at the plate nor in the field. If the Phillies manage to get rid of him, they will be very fortunate. I cannot imagine why any team would want such a player.
