Last night while I was watching the local San Diego news for highlights of the A's victory over the Padres I heard that our local minor league club, the San Diego Surf Dawgs had just signed Jose Canseco. :clapping
I went to a few of the Surf Dawgs games last season just to see Rickey Henderson play again and now will get the opportunity to see another member of the 1989 Championship Oakland A's team wearing a San Diego Surf Dawgs uniform.

I guess it is an independant league they are playing in. What is the name of that league? I have never heard of the team anyway.

The Golden Baseball League is an Independant league. It has 6 teams, all owned by the league and they play 80 games. I noticed on the roster that most of the Surf Dawgs played rookie or single A ball. There is one player that had AA experience. Another player is 30 years old. It also says that Canseco will earn the maximum $2500 a month and has an endorsement deal for merchandise sold. I'd love to go to one of these games!

Enjoy this site! Thanks for the nice greeting. :) I found this site by chance last Thursday while I was listening to the A's - Padres game on the radio and it looks like this is the right place to go to whenever I have any questions about the A's.
Yes, I'm definitely planning to go to see Canseco's debut this Friday. The Surf Dawgs play on the campus of San Diego State University, which also happens to be my alma mater.

Sabathia pitch this year, it was cool.Henderson & Canseco were two of my favorite A's players to watch during the '89 Championship season so it is very cool to have the opportunity to watch them play right here in San Diego. Just thought I would mention too that I was lucky enough to meet Dave Stewart a few years ago at a restaurant in downtown San Diego. At the time Dave owned a home in the city of Poway, which is in San Diego county.

If all teams are owned by the league, is it a real competition then?
It appears to me that in this way the league may decide where the players will play. Seems kinda weird to me.

Canseco seeks trade for personal reasons
RENO, Nev. -- Jose Canseco, making his return to professional baseball in the minor leagues, has asked to be traded from the San Diego Surf Dawgs after playing one game.
Golden Baseball League commissioner Kevin Outcalt said negotiations are under way to send the former Major League All-Star to the Long Beach Armada, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported Wednesday.
Canseco asked to be traded because of child custody responsibilities that require him to be in the Los Angeles area for more time than he anticipated, Outcalt said.
"He found out today and it surprised everybody," Outcalt said Tuesday. "He has family responsibilities."
Outcalt said that the deal should be completed Wednesday to send him to Long Beach and that the only thing pending was who he would be traded for.
Canseco was signed to the Surf Dawgs on June 29 and said he would hit and pitch.
The former American League Rookie of the Year last played professional baseball for the Chicago White Sox in 2001. His last pitching stint came in 1993 for the Texas Rangers, when he threw one inning and gave up three runs on two hits with three walks.
The San Diego Surf Dawgs are in Reno for a three-game series against the Silver Sox.

It looks like this will be the case with the Canseco trade. There are no owners to negotiate or veto the transaction, only the commissioner. It appears that Because Canseco has a drawing name, the league will do as he asks. I'm curious to see if San Diego will get a Long Beach benchwarmer or starting player in return. This must be a bummer for the San Diego fans but they'll still see plenty of him in a 6 team league. He sure doesn't do anything quietly!

Actually there are only three more regular season SurfDawgs home games scheduled against Long Beach during the last weekend of July:

When you sign a goofball don't be surprised when you end up behind the 8-ball.

I'm curious to see if San Diego will get a Long Beach benchwarmer or starting player in return. The first sports story last night on KUSI, a local TV station that has been giving lots of coverage to the Surf Dawgs - Canseco story, was that the trade had been completed between San Diego and Long Beach and that the Surf Dawgs would receive a pitcher who had recently defected from Cuba.

Cuban for a Cuban. Only they are like 20 years apart or something. Hopefully everyone is happy now. I find it interesting that the league controls all the teams.

The Surf Dawgs will grant refunds to fans who purchased tickets for tomorrow's game in anticipation of seeing Canseco, Watkins said. The club said it received a few calls yesterday from fans in reaction to the trade, mostly seeking such refunds.

This looks like a good deal for San Diego. If he pitched for 3 International champions,he must have some talent. I know that Canseco's "Star" is very intriguing, the Surf Dawgs definitely need pitching. I looked at their team stats. They lost 26-3 on the eve before this article came out.Ouch!

Knuckleballer Canseco walks five, hits four in debut
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Jose Canseco's knuckleball was uncontrollable -- and it made his debut as a starting pitcher pretty ugly.
Long Beach Armada pitcher Jose Canseco warms up before Wednesday's game against the Reno Silver Sox.The former American League MVP hit four batters and walked five others in 4 1/3 innings for the Long Beach Armada on Wednesday night. He also gave up a home run on a "flat knuckleball" and recorded his first career strikeout during an 8-2 loss to the Reno Silver Fox.
"Overall, it felt pretty good," said Canseco, who joined the independent Golden Baseball League earlier this year. "It took me a little while to get a rhythm out there, and I walked too many guys. It should get better."
It's been 13 years since the 42-year-old pitched an inning for the Texas Rangers in a blowout loss. He did pitch part of an inning in the league's All-Star game in June.
Armada manager Darrell Evans said he saw Canseco's performance in that game and was impressed that the former slugger was throwing strikes.
"That's the main thing," Evans said before Wednesday's game. "You throw strikes with a knuckleball and sometimes they don't hit it very good, so hopefully that will happen tonight."
Canseco, who has acknowledged using steroids in the past, is scheduled to make another start Sunday at Yuma, Ariz.
"It's fun," said Canseco, who as a designated hitter is batting just .169 with four home runs and nine RBI in 21 games with Long Beach. "I take it serious out there when I'm in the game. I try to do the best possible. I'd love to throw a shutout or no-hitter or whatever. I'm a competitor."

And this is where somebody informs me why there is a thumbs-up next to the title and not a thumbs-down :laugh. Maybe it was added after they got rid of him :D.

Ha!
He wants to play to show off his crappy "knuckleball", that's just weak.
