I was visiting Boston last week and ran into a nice guy and his wife at Fenway while waiting for the game to start. I believe his name was Cy Brown, but I could have that wrong. He was visiting from Phoenix. He told me that he was former big league player. I have tried to find info about him online, but can find nothing. Here are some of the things he told me.

He came up with the Milwaukee Braves at age 16. He had a fastball estimated at 98-100 MPH. He played for the Cincinati Reds and in 1964 (I think he was 18 then) he was in a game in Los Angeles and tried to stretch a single into a double and slid into second and hurt his pitching arm or sholder. He was released and given a bus ticket back to Kentucky and $500.

He subsequently taught pitching at schools and in Japan.

I don't think he was putting me on, but I can't find any info on him online. anyone ever hear of him (I may have the name wrong)? Any idea where to look? There are not any players listed who retired in 1964 who fit.

Thanks,

JBK

I think he may have been pulling your leg. There was no players for the Braves who came up at the age of 16 in the erly 60's or late 50's. And the youngest player on the Reds in 1964 was 19 and his name was Billy McCool. Ecept he did not retire that year and did not come up with the Braves. Maybe he was a minor leaguer or something but I cant find anyone who matches that description.

Sounds a bit like a story teller to me, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.

My cousin looked on a list he bookmarked on the Internet of Reds players listed alphabetically from the 1800's to the present. He found several Browns but none were named Cy. The closest sounding player was "Stub." My thought is that Cy was his nickname and not his given name which would likely be how he was listed on the roster. Do they list Cy Young as Cy or with his given first name?
