We knew Hendrickson was probably going to be traded. I have always like Jae Seo, not too bad a deal. I am surprised at first look about the trading of Toby Hall. However Hall would be looking for a bigger contract, and Navarro althougj he is struggling this year is still considered one of the best young catchers in baseball. The bigger question is what else is going to happen?

Toby Hall has peaked while Navarro has a huge upside and is only 22 years old. He could be the long term solution at catcher. Hendrickson is 32 years old and didn't fit into the long term plans of the team. He has had a great first half of the season but his past history suggests it was a fluke. Jae Seo?? Seems to have unfulfilled potential and is younger at 29 years old. His career numbers are also better then Hedricksons. I also read that the Mets have shown interest in reacquiring him, so he may not be here long. One article re the trade said the Rays sent cash to the Dodgers to get the deal done. That alone is an encouraging sign. I can' t imagine the old regime spending money to get a trade done. On balance I'd say it was a deal worth making.

Eddiey, couldn't have said it better myself. Navarro lost his job to injury this year and will be our starting catcher for quite a few years. Seo had a decent year in NY last season, as far as ERA and WHIP. This year, he never had his role defined, as the Dodgers jerked him back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation. Both should be in the lineup tonight in Miami. Seo will work and inning or 2 out of the pen, and is penciled in to start Sunday @ Washington. Navarro will be starting 6 days a week, i would imagine.
The next question is when is Huff and Lugo moving on? :crazy

I think this is a great trade for the Dodgers. Hendrickson, seems close to turning it around. Not that he is bad, but I think inconsistent is a better word for it. I like him. I like the D-Rays. I have followed them since Lou left the M's and went down there and I believe they have a good team that is just a few pitchers away from being a good club. I hope this is not a sign that a fire sale might be coming. For years, the M's traded away guys when they were getting good, because they didn't want to pay the frieght. Then they would sign over the hill veterans way past their prime. I hope this doesn't happen in Tampa.

The Rays sent a million bucks to the Dodgers to get the deal done. Fire Sale?
It doesn't sound like one to me.

Lurch is in a contract year. Yes, he's been kind of consistent, and maybe he figured how to control his delivery late like Randy Johnson did, but he doesn't have Randy Johnson's stuff. He hasn't gotten the run support this year, which accounts for his record, but he gave the Rays a chance to win each time out.
But look at Navarro vs Hall. Tubby Hall is 30, has been with the Rays for awhile and was arbitration eligible. He's due for a raise without deserving one. For a catcher, and a wide body at that, he doesn't hit for power enough. He doesn't sacrifice his body either on imminent home plate collisions either, kind of ole's it too much for my taste. Navarro is 22, has shown some pop in limited ABs, and can only get better with a young team. Winner-Rays.
Seo vs Hendrickson. 29 year old versus 32 year old. Seo doesn't beat himself, his K to BB ratio is excellent. His ERA and WHIP are better than Lurch. He will be a stop gap for a few years until Niemann and Townsend are ready to be here. Trade- equal value.
Plus the Rays are still due a PTBNL, probably depending on the performance of Lurch the next few months. Like Eddiey said, for the Rays to throw in a million dollars shows it's not a salary dump. The Rays in the past were always looking to GET $$$, not give it up :grouchy

I saw this on another board, comparing Seo to Hendrickson:
STATS FROM APRIL '04 TO TODAY:
=============SEO=====LURCH
ERA==========4.23====5.05
HITS P9======9.41====10.36
K P9=========5.4=====4.5
BB P9========3.0=====2.6
HR P9========1.32====1.10
QUALITY S:===51 %===34 % (CLOSE ESTIMATES)
Looks like a more even trade than I thought :(

The Dodgers really jacked him around this year. Give him consistent innings and he might be serviceable starter who will be better long term then Hendrickson. His numbers last year with Mets were good.

This is certainly not a salary dump. Lugo and Huff will probably get traded, and the Rays will get some more young players. This time there are players to take their place. Even though I am not sold on Upton as a shortstop, I say bring him up now let him play every day at short, and lets let his performance make the decision.

Dioner Navarro and his wife and newborn baby were involved in a hit and run accident after last night's game. His SUV was slammed into, and rolled over twice, coming to rest on its roof. Luckily, everyone was wearing seat belts and no one was hurt. Navarro is not in the lineup tonight :ughh
