Would this fix the woes of the two teams?
Right now:
Florida has no stadium, Tampa Does
Both teams have no real chance for the next few years
Tampa needs a name change, marlins don't
I introduce to you......
THE TAMPA BAY MARLINS!
I'm assuming they would pick the best players among both teams to create one, playoff-worthy team, while trading or releasing to free agency all other players. They could get out from under bad contracts this way, and double the quality of the farm system, while slightly improving the quality of play in the majors overall with all the releases making for more talent available but with fewer spots.
The market would also be significantly larger for the team, while the coffers would merge to some extent (though I'm sure one owner will take off). They could be a national league team, so the American League East wouldn't haunt them.
I wonder what Marlins fans would think to this.........

The idea about a merger has been put forth often by members, problem is that would mean an odd number of teams in the MLB, meaning that there are three options: (1) The odd team out has 3 off days in a row --wouldn't be practical for an MLB team to do so, (2) Expansion to keep the league at 30 teams --practical but probably not wise or (3) Contraction, personally I'm not against the idea though I can think of many fans that would not approve.
So essentially by merging the Florida teams we'd have to either add or remove a team in the Majors, neither of which seem all that pactical at the moment.

Also, the naming of the team would probably more successful if they used "Florida" as there location name...I don't imagine many Miami residents supporting a team named for TB.
Also, playing a certain number of games in Miami would probably be a good idea for the franchise too.

Innovative, but highly unlikely. Just think Carl Crawford and Miguel Cabrera on the same team.

Twentynine teams in MLB? What about the schedules... Then every 3 - 4 games one team won't play.

Idea that's been tossed around.
1) But the team should stay in Miami since it's a bigger market.
2)I think the Marlins are on target to compete for a WC within the next 3 years. They have to because after that they won't be able to afford Miguel C.
3)Also, IMO they would have stayed in contention this year had they had another fire sale. I mean they've more than exceed expectations this year and they aren't playing as bad as we all thought they would.

The Miampa Devilfish. Get Disney back involved in baseball ownership, have them based out of Orlando. Play games in Space Mountain. Domed stadium without the unsightly view.

I assume that Anibal Sanchez is in that rotation now?
As for the manager...keep Joe...Joe Maddon. Unlike the anal-retentive bully in South Florida, Maddon doesn't care if a player wears a mustache and I doubt that Maddon would have tried to strangle Scott Olsen. Also, Maddon paid his dues as a longtime minor league manager and coach...Joey Pitbull hasn't as far as I am concerned. A year in the TV booth and a year as a bench coach don't cut it as far as I am concerned...

You wonder, well here is my opinion. Never
Not becuse i live in Miami or because i am a marlins fan but all you have to do is look at the numbers the marlins put this season after a firesale year with most of them being rookies. The Marlins have a better team than TB anywhere you put it. If Lorian doesn't sell the players this years and adds some closers i think that we have a good chance of being a threat. I don't expect to win the World Series but whatch out Mets.

I wonder what Marlins fans would think to this.........
This is ridiculous and all the Marlins' fans would think that this is the most ridiculous idea's been discussed ever in humanity.
Come on people, how come you guys are going to think we are going to like this.
People don't go to the stadium because I already expressed in the Marlins Attendance thread: http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=46556
None of what affects us affects the Rays' fans and they still don't draw if the Red Sox and Yankees don't go there.
Please, don't mock our beloved franchise like this.
Respect people that we won two championships in a span of 6 years, even after the team was dismantled.

It seems like every year I think the Devil Rays will get better, but they don't.
The Marlins are a much better franchise than the Rays and don't need to "merge".
Also it would be unfair to have the Fish's pitching prospects and the Rays hitting prospects...

The only thing we care about TB is Rocco Baldelli or Carl Crawford.
Other than that, they can keep playing in Tropicana Field and I will cheer on them when they broadcast the games over in FSN Florida:clapping
