with all their history, pennants, world championships, hall of famers, nationwide fan base, etc, it would almost go without saying that the cards have been, historically, the class of the National League. but what about the dodgers? they have as many pennants, hall of famers, fans that the cards have (although fewer world series victories). so who's the greatest franchise in NL history? cardinals or dodgers?

Go get on the Brooklyn Dodger forum and ask their fans if they think that the records and successes of their Dodgers should be included with the LA group.

When you factor in all the things you mentioned, plus the longevity in one city, the St. Louis Cardinals deserve that desigination.

The longevity in one city probably gives the Cards the edge. If you get by that bias the Giants would be right there to0, The Giants have won more games and pennants than he Cards. The Cards have won more WS.

i would definetly include the brooklyn history as part of the discussion-without total franchise records, the dodgers or giants or braves couldn't stay in the arguement. i think the fact that the dodgers have played in the two largest markets in the country add something in their favor (what it is, i'm not really sure).

9 World Series wins for the Cars.... enought for me (biased of course) to proclaim them the best in the NL.

Also The Cards have a winning record against the Yankees in the World Series, beating the Bronx Bombers in 1926, 42 and 64. They Cards have lost to the Yankees twice.

Arizona beat the Yankees the one WS they faced them. I don't believe any other National League Franchises have winning records against the Yanks.

Florida beat them in the 2003 World Series. And 64Cards is right, the fans of the old Brooklyn Dodger fans don't include the Los Angeles "Dodgers" in their history....

The same can be said for STL Browns fans and the Baltimore Orioles...

That's right... how could I forget about the dominance and incredible business savvy that is the Florida Marlins!! :crazy

I guess I will take the Cards 3 wins and 2 losses (against GREAT Yankee teams from the 20's, 40's and 60's) against the Marlins and DBacks 1 for 1's against them.

My grandmother was (and is, really) a HUGE Brooklyn Dodgers fan. She used to pop up to Yankee Stadium to see Ruth and Gehrig and DiMaggio from time to time, but she lived at Ebbet's Field. She's still, to this day, offended that the LA team gets to use the same name as the "real" Dodgers. The pain Brooklyn fans felt about that move is enough for me to consider it a seperate franchise... I don't do that for other teams that moved, but for the Dodgers, I do.

By the way, I'm taking her to Yankee Stadium in a couple of weeks to see them play the DRays. She goes to games at Shea quite often, but hasn't been to a game at Yankee Stadium since the 1955 World Series. The first game she went to at Yankee Stadium was in 1928, so it's an almost 80 year span of watching games at the Stadium.

Agreed - Cardinals over the Dodgers.

St. Louis has won 16 pennants, and 9 World Series.
Brooklyn/Los Angeles have won 18 pennants, but only 6 World Series.

Cardinals have the best (home) uniform in all of baseball, too.

not to hate on the fish too much but two words for you: wild card.

The Cards have been a power in the NL for almost as long as the Yanks in the AL. They are the only one of the original NL teams with a winning record against the Yanks in the WS. They have won more WS than any other NL team. The names Hornsby, Musial, Gibson, Brock, McGwire, and Dean roll off the tongues of every baseball fan with ease.
Are the Cards the greatest NL franchise ever. I say yes.

I wasn't talking about the Marlins, I was talking about the pennant-winning Yankee teams of 01 and 03.

I never thought about it until this thread, but I guess they are really the only NL team with an "aura" comporable to that of teams like the Yankees or the Red Sox.

10 world championships (when really we should have 13-14 in total)
The greatest Right handed hitter at his prime played for us in Rogers Hornsby and led us to our first world championship.
The greatest defensive shortstop of all time in Ozzie Smith played for us and led us to our 9th world championship.
etc.

i could go on and on but in all because of how many championships we won and how many world series we have been in i would have to say that we are the class of National League.
