What is going on with Ensberg? [Archive]

Maybe I've missed something, or maybe he's not reporting publicly some injury, but the numbers he has to this point (other than homers) are dismal... :(

As of 6/24/06, his major stats are:

AVG: .246
HR: 18
RBI: 39

He's a MUCH better hitter than what those numbers reflect!!! I'm at a loss for words...

Anyone care to chime in with some intelligent input?

He is on pace for a .245/42/92 type season. Troy Glaus like numbers. Minute made projects his homers and 'bi's.

He is on pace for 30+ more rbis. Everyone knows rbi's are the most important start next to runs.

The ribbies aren't where they should be, IMO...he's in a TERRIBLE slump with his BA...hitting just .171 over the last 30 days!

You can't say he's doing as well as he is capable of...that's my point. If he hits 40-45 homers and knocks in only 90 or so runs, that's pretty pathetic. Especially for Morgan, who has a decent lifetime BA!

He hasn't done squat since he hurt his back/shoulder a couple of weeks back diving for a pop.

I've also always thought of him as a bit lackadaisical, in many ways the same thing I always thought afflicted Moises 'El Pollo' Alou and Jeff Kent. Ensberg is probably the strongest guy on the team and has a wealth of talent. But he doesn't play with much fire in his belly, seems to chalk up being called out on strikes as just, "Oh well, that's what God planned for me on that at bat." No, Morgan, it has nothing to do with God's plan. You struck out because the pitcher put one down the middle and you failed to take the bat off your shoulder.

Plus he is always piddling with his batting stance and that just makes it so difficult as far as I'm concerned to find any consistency.

He missed going to the All-Star game, despite having nearly 20 HR's, but I guess his fielding and BA keeps him from going. He's basically a Tom Brookens player - gets an average 10-20 jacks, but not a good fielder. He really needs to get better in fielding and get his BA up. His amount of K's (70) is pretty high in my opinion, so he needs to cut back from striking out and swing the bat to get his BA higher.

I agree that he could play with more "fire under his belly" - at least, more visibly. I'm tired of watching him take strike 3 so much, also. He DOES walk a lot, but he doesn't have the same type of eye as, oh, say Berkman or Bagwell.

If you've got power, don't be afraid to put it to the test. This isn't government, it's baseball. ;)

You know, I was at that very game where he injured his shoulder diving after that foul ball. I was on the third base side, also, so I had a good look. I had a hunch that was partly to blame. :(

All the best to him getting back on track. At least Huff can play several positions, so he probably won't hit the bench when Ensberg returns (assuming he returns to form).

And no, I don't think last year was a "fluke" season for Mo at all.

I don't know how you can go downhill that badly in such a short period of time. :(

Pay closer attention to his numbers. He's drawn so many walks this year, his OBP is .394. His power isn't what it was last year, but he's still productive in that area. I'd say he's been the second best hitter on the Astros, behind Berkman, of course.
I'd like to see his BA climb up, but he is most certainly not having a bad season, even for him.

Looking at his entire career, you may be right. But comparing his numbers to last season, Ensberg has really tanked. Ensberg's OBP last season was .388, just a hair lower than it is now, and his average last year was .283. Slugging and OPS this season are both down for Morgan, too. Considering he's a career .270 hitter, I'd say he unfortunately took quite a nosedive.

I think he is feeling uncomfortable with Huff being there to replace him at 3rd if he is not producing .

No, other than April he wasnt really producing at all.

In May he batted .216 with an OPS of .779
In June he batted .145 with an OPS of .588.

Oh man, c'mon...please! First off, none of us know how "comfortable" he was feeling.

Secondly, he wasn't producing squat when you look at his projections for this year. It appeared to be a .280's / 35 HR / 110 RBI season, at the very least.

So he can walk. Whoopty-Doo! Sluggers like Berkman and Bagwell can afford to do that, because they know when to pull the trigger! You can't very well say Mo was the offensive threat in 2006 that he was in 2005 (very understated, and purposely so).

It's just a sad deal all the way around. Nevertheless, I won't accept ridiculous claims about him "producing" this year...!
