Joe Orsulak....one of the trends that I have noticed is that the Pirate Organization must preach "signing" to their players because, along with the Braves, by far, more than any other teams.
Also, Portland Sea Dog tickets in the mail today (Aug 12th vs. Akron) I tell you that to tell you this.....I have to take an old autograph friend to a Sea Dogs game as a thanks for sending some autographs to me recently.
I have a small group of friends in the hobby who are all terrific at sharing, "gifting" and thanking each other for autographs, and my friend that I am talking about here sent a large collection of autographs that contained these baseball sig's in the package:
These are all from his personal collection and what he considers his extras!!!

Just a few days later it was annouced that they had a "hatchling"...Millie-gator. Now if I do the math right, married, two days later, they have a kid...the gestation period for alligators must be like 100 days....hey, wait a minute, the kid is "hatched" out of wedlock. Nice example for the kids!!!!
UPDATE ON MASCOTS Married in March but birth of Millie was 45 days later...gestation period for 'gators is 45 days....so wedding night bliss....

I took a gamble with Mark Buherle a few months ago, and he signed both of my cards in about 2 weeks time frame.

Hey A/C
Nice of the Gene Freeze and Hulett both "family" players.
I have not been able to find card of Freeze but look at Beckett's again.
Mondays are pretty much "loaded"...the most I ever got in one day (Monday, 28)
A/C I "family" players, perhaps we can help each other. Beleive me there are lots and lots. Currently, and I haven't counted lately....complete father-sons sets about 90 and completed brother-brother sets around 120 and counting. I sent out, must have been 20 the past week of ones that I am missing...I.E. Skip and Chip Caray...broadcaster Bob Wolff (grandson playing in minors) and a bunch of Senior League dual cards. I really like that part of the hobby as that is a constant theme (family) I used with my son and some of my younger hobby friends.
Perhaps, we my work slows done a bit I can give you a list of the ones I am missing.
Thanks for you post as well.

Hey Bill,
The Gene Freese card was part of a 100 card Topps lot that I bought on eBay a few weeks back. Well I have Tug like I stated above, I just don't have his dad's signature though. Lately I have been on a 1960-1969 "kick". And a few minor leaguers here and there. I agree about monday's being loaded. For me friday and saturday's are always the worst. :( And retired living brother/ brother combos that sign ttm? I'm interested in that one. I tell ya what... my BEST father / son combo was 2 cards by Dale Berra, and two cards from Yogi Berra. That was a few years back. What stinks is that my older brother and my uncle collect through the mail, but none of my friends down here care to do it (some think that it is a waste). But it's there loss. It is kinda getting pricey with always buying envelopes, pens, paper, and especially stamps. If the price ever reaches a dollar a stamp.. I will stop... maybe. ;)

Romansport,
I usually send to ball park or to home.....I would say pick current player that I have had good luck with and sent it.
Minor leaguers are easy to do....just go to

type in players last name, click name, click team info and the address will show...good luck

Rom....
I send up to three cards or items of the player...if it is more than that I will ask if he would like to keep some for himself. Put a SASE in your envelope and make sure to say please and thanks...
I do this along with my son so its like a family effort so I most always will mention the players family.
Seems to work especially with the younger players.

No need to be baffled. And to answer your question... yes. We send between one to three cards, and they sign them. WELL MOST players sign. Don't expect Barry Bonds to sign. :ughh

I havent been on this sight in months, but I'm glad to see so many ttmers. These are all the succeses I 've gotten in the past week: (image link at bottom of post)
Here are some ones I've recently sent out:
Jacoby Ellsbury c/o Portland (hopefully he wasnt traded for Lopez or possibly Jones, idk,)
Chris Volstad c/o Greensboro
Andre Ethier c/o LA Dodgers
Shin Soo Choo c/o Cleveland
Joel Guzman c/o Durham
Paul Konerko
Jon Garland
Scott Podsednik
Dustin Hermanson c/o Charlotte
Zach Grienke c/o Wichita
Mike MacDougal c/o Chicago
If you havent noticed, I'm trying to get the whole topps 2005 world series set autographed, and so far I have twenty one out of thirty. Hope to reply again soon.

Impressive list that you sent out. I too sent out a request to Volstad recently. Are you guessing with Konerko and Garland?
Also with your signed cards... did David Wright sign ttm? What about Jenks?

Yep, all of those are ttm's that I've gotten back regular season in the last two weeks, except the Barmes. But David Wright is an extremely good signer, and if you send to him, you should get it back. I'm thinking of sending him the SI cover with him and the Mets. The Jenks one took less than a week to get back. With the Konerko and Garland, I saw spring training succeses with them, but yeah, I am guessing, but I have to complete that set, so it's worth a try.

Great! Welcome to the hobby! :) I'm glad that my countless private messages and Bill's countless PM's to you paid off.
To me personally this hobby is addicting. My girlfriend gets pissed at me all the time. Her:" Hey honey? What are you doing? It's midnight, and you have to be up for work in 5 hours."
Me:" I'll be in bed soon, I have a few more players to write to." LOL... she helps me out though, when I get paid I buy 3 books of stamps, and when she gets paid she buys me a book of stamps also. It's all in fun. :)

This was probably my best ever ttm day. I recieved three successes back today, all from great players
Don Larsen c/o home, 10 days. Signed 1/2 cards sent. Also sent back a typed note saying he would not sign the other card, which was a fleer card, because the company had used his name without permission.
Robin Roberts c/o home, about a week. Signed 1/2 cards sent with a blue sharpie. Did not sign it with "'72 HOF" like he had with other successes I've seen, but still a great success from a Hall of Famer.
Last, but certainly not least, Andre Ethier c/o L.A. Dodgers in about 10 days. Signed 1/1 cards sent in blue sharpie. Also sent back a hand written note that said, "Eric- Thanks for the letter and interest, Andre." I find that awesome that a player actually sent back a personal note, let alone read my letter. Scans are below.

People don't always like to just hand out their addresses, because we pay for them, and in respect of the player. If you're serious about ttming, then buy a book or SASEsportcollectors memborship. They're well worth it.
Never the less, I usually help people out a couple of times, so here you go: Cabrera lives in Venezuela, Cordero lives in the Dominican.

Rob Johnson again..yesterday too...
Strange mail week this week as it seems that almost every envelope has come in damaged. Tuesday's mail we had two envelopes actually opened..one being torn off one end. Today, we had one torn and came in a postage package from the Post Master with appologies as to the damaged letter. All items were in tack though.....I am going to blame it on the full moon....
Reminds me of the time we sent for Darryl Strawberry...looked up his address.....Florida State Prison, Jacksonville...cell number ?????...we did a google search under "Baseball players who could have had it all...but didn't", thats where we found Dwight Gooden too!!!! and sent it to him....
The letter came back all "interogated"...I mean words X'ed out....dyed for prints and a letter from the Warden explaining what happened. Wow..I think they thought we were trying to "sneak in" some kind of secret code for the lockup or perhaps that we were trying to hide some kind of file....heck...we didn't want him to get out...we wanted him to stay in...
Strange but true...
No autograph by the way...

Congrats on the Searage. I sent to him back in 1999 and I never got a response. I think I sent to him when he was a coach with the Orlando Rays.
I got 2 back on Monday and 2 on Tuesday:
Monday:
Harley Hisner, 2/2, 6 days. In his only major leage appearance, he surrendered Joe DiMaggio's last regular season hit. In the same game he struck out Mickey Mantle twice and went 1 for 2. He lost, 3-0. He wrote all of that on the two index cards I sent to him.
Frank Verdi, 2/2, 6 days.
Tuesday:
George Kell, 2/2, 7 days
Don Gutteridge 4/2, 7 days, answered my questions on the back of my letter and included two of his own home made cards as well.

Kearns, maybe we could work out a trade. I have over a thousand signed bb cards, with hundreds available to trade. let me know.
Hisner and Verdi are cup-of-coffee type players. Since they weren't on cards, I sent them index cards to sign. Hisner pitched his only game against the Yankees, and Verdi played one game for the Yankees in 1953, but never got an at-bat, a lot like Moonlight Graham in Field of Dreams.
I've always had a fascination with guys who've only played one game or just a handful of games. They always seem to have a story to tell. If I had a scanner, I'd show you but here's what Hisner wrote on each index card:
Harley P. Hisner
Boston Red Sox 1951
Joe Dimaggio got his last
regular season hit off me
Struck out Mickey Mantle twice.
Sept 30-1951 at Yankee Stadium
got beat 3 to 0 I was 1 for 2
at the plate, never got another chance.
I've gotten full-page letters from some of the guys I wrote to. Sure, it's not like getting a super star's autograph after months of waiting, but I think it's cool :)

I haven't read through this whole thread yet but I just had a couple of questions.
1) if you write a player "c/o the team" you can be sure that player is the one signing the item right?
2) big name players will actually sign? I thought it was cool that someone got a ball signed by Mariano Rivera! I thought it was risky to send a ball though?
3) does anyone have anything signed by Nate Robertson? Roger Clemens? Pedro? I want to know if these guys sign.

There is NO guarantee on any of this, its very unlikely that you'll get an auto from a premier player. You can't be sure if it is the person signing it. I haven't seen any TTM success on the guys you mention. However, some consistenly good signers are Charlie Hough, Ty Wigginton, Jake Westbrook and Jarrod Washburn. Normally minor league players are pretty good, but the season is over for them. For addresses of retired or current players and home try sports-collectors.net i think is the address. Hope this helps!!!

Nate Robertson is a great signer, but it's much too late. However, the Arizona fall league is coming up, and that's a great way to get ttm's. Some more good signers are Jamie Moyer, Al Kaline, Stan Musial, Sparky Anderson, Bobby Doer, Bob Feller, Bobby Jenks, Jim Kaat, Mark Buehrle, Mark Prior (lately), Garret Anderson, AJ Pierzynski, and Jim Thome, although it's now debateable if his sigs are authentic, but luckily all mine are ip.

Yeah, I guess it's too late for now. I'll have to write to Nate next season. I'd love to get Sparky and Musial. I like Jim Thome too; how come it's debatable if his sigs are authentic? When did people start wondering if it was? What does "ip" mean?

IP means in person. This years Thome successes are questionable for several reasons. The auto doesn't match well up to his certified sigs. Also, some successes were postmarked AZ when he and the Sox were either in CHI or on the road.

Oh man, I can't believe I didn't know what IP meant. :hp
Different signatures alone wouldn't be enough to show that someone else signed them (my sig changes all the time) but on top of that, the different postmarks is good proof that he didn't actually sign them. That's too bad. I had heard he was a good guy. I don't like scam artists.

I thought Musial did. I think you get back a generic postcard, but supposedly it's authentic. I could be confusing him with someone else, though.
Sparky Anderson is an excellent TTMer. Although his signature comes out pretty weird on a card, kinda starts horizontal and starts going vertical when he runs out of space.

There were some umpire sets made back in the late 80s that I use. I usually send a couple cards and an index card. Sometimes the index card gets signed, sometimes it doesn't.

As for umpires, I imagine you could send them a copy of the rulebook to autograph. I doubt they'd think you're sending them a subliminal message to learn the rules or anything.

I'm no big 'graph collector, but Rocket Ron is one of the handful of autographs of guys I want. About how long did it take to get his signature back? Also, can you PM me with his address?
BTW, in 1977, my best friend actually succeeded in getting Willie Mays' autograph this way. It was a 1966 Topps card, and he already had a ball signed by Mays. Although I'm sure times have changed, he gave me the card when I first started collecting Willie Mays baseball cards (yes, I have the '51 Bowman rookie...which my Dad pulled in 1951). It wasn't totally free, though...I had to mow his lawn (he's 14 years my senior) for three months afterward.

Hey, one of the number one rules of autograph collecting is never to get mad at the players for they're signing habits. Jim Thome is a great guy, and we all know that for sure. He probably gets close to 300 autograph requests a month, and hes always been a good signer. You guys would probably be mad at him if he didnt sign as well. Maybe he authorized a different signer for a week or so while he was busy with something else. And before you start accusing him of being a "scam artist", maybe you should look at the facts, such as that he has family in Arizona. Plus, it's an authorized signature if he did. And, there's been very few that have come back questionable anyways. So I don't know why you would think of him as a scam artist, because thats just ignorancy.
Oh yeah, and Stan Musial does send you back a real signature, and it only tool mine about a week, he's a great signer TTM.

I would love to believe that the Thome autos are real ( I have 4), but I don't believe they are. I suggest searching some of the much larger autograph related sites, and you will see some pretty interesting info regarding ghostsigners and stamps.
Here is a partial list of players that are known to either ghostsign or stamp. (not all are baseball)
Joe Montana
Mo Vaughn
Terry Bradshaw- fine example of ghostsigner
Bernie Williams (especially ones sent 2000 and later)
Adam Dunn- ghostsigner
Mark Teixeira-stamped
Hank Blalock- stamped
Mark Mulder-stamped
Matt Holliday- why would he ghostsign?

In 2006, especially st, most ttm successes were believed and certified as real. It's just up until about late July that we've started to see these "different ones" We just can't be that negative on these guys is all im saying.

Now that's funny! :D
Sorry, but if he "authorized" someone else to sign items for him, so what? It's still not his signature, right?

I was going to keep my mouth shut about his statement. So, if I authorize you to sign my name for a week, is it still my signature? Not just no, but heck no.
Thome may be a "nice" guy but being nice has no relavance on whether he is signing, he is stamping, using a ghostsigner or autopen. In my book, he may be a good player but a jerk for faking his sig. I would rather have a rts or nothing at all than for a player to try to trick me into thinking his sig is real.
If indeed Thome's sig's are not real, in my mind he has moved into the same catagory as Bernie Williams, Marc Bulger or Mark Mulder. (all are notorious for their fake sigs)

From SouthsideChamps....
"Hey, one of the number one rules of autograph collecting is never to get mad at the players for they're signing habits. Jim Thome is a great guy, and we all know that for sure. He probably gets close to 300 autograph requests a month...."
The debate of who signs, ghost signers...real or not real...if we can keep in mind that we are lucky that any of the players sign at all is amazing.
I sent an autograph request out to a player (the name eludes me) that I had never heard of. I found a couple of cards 60's topps and sent them....It came back about a month later with a letter. The letter was written by someone else and went like this.."Sorry to inform you, I am not the so-in-so you are looking for, I am a white 49 years old that only played baseball in highschool. I do recieve over 600 reguests a year, but it is not me. So....
600 request for a player THAT I NEVER EVEN HEARD OF breaks down to 12 a week or 2 a day....FOR A PLAYER THAT PLAYED 45 YRS AGO...that I don't even know...
So, Mr. Thome is getting requests in the range of "a truck load a week".. Can't even imagine the volumne of mail that Musial, AAron and others must be getting....and to think that they sign for us.
I think we all a ought to stop whinning and and pray for these players that their health remains good, good enough that they can pass on their legacy to us..

Well said Kearnes. I got into autographing and sports card collecting with my father. He always told me to be grateful to anybody that signs, wether he is the backup catcher or a future HOF. I have memories or feelings about each and every card in my collection.
The debate about if certain auto's are real or not will go on for years. It's part of the hobby.
When I was younger, I worked as a bat boy for the San Antonio Missions, who were then the AA team for the Dodgers. You can't imagine how many auto requests each player gets ttm. This was in the late 80's. Most of our good players averaged 50 letters a week. This was before the hobby exploded. Imagine what they get now.
I also saw stuff that would drive you crazy. I personally saw players just throw the letters away without opening them up. I also saw players using the letters as coasters while they play poker.
There really isn't a point to this rant, but my father also taught me to look at ttm auto collecting and sports card collecting as a form of legalized gambling. Meaning, sometimes you win, more often you loose, and sometimes you break the bank. But you will become addicted:crazy . I know I am.

WELL SAID!!!
I've been doing this about a year and a half and I'm hooked. I consider it a blessing to get anything back, and i think thats how we have to look at it. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Lets just be happy to be able to have bragging rights and be able to pass these on to our relatives. (how did you get a job as a bat boy anyway?)

My Dad was stationed in San Antonio for 6 years. I come from a baseball family, so when we moved there we got season tickets for the Missions. After the 3rd year, I just asked the club if they needed help. I worked for one year as a bat boy. It was fun. I wish I was more into autograph collecting then. After working as a bat boy, I went to work in the press box as a runner. Which basically means that I do whatever the owner needed. Somedays I worked in the locker rooms, other days I worked in the concession stands. It was a good time.

Good points by all. I'm sure there are players who get thousands of letters a week. Personally, I'd rather get something back rubber-stamped than autopenned or ghost-signed. At least with a rubber stamp, there's no guessing whether or not the signature is genuine :)

True enought pesky, but as opposed to get any of the fake's back, I would like to get my sase back. Rubberstamped, imo are some of the easiest to detect. I have a great Mark Brunell and Mark Mulder that are stamped.

As for how many requests players get- When I send to minor league or retired players I always ask a couple of questions. Usually I about something specific to their career or teams they played on. I always ask them "about how many fan letters do you receive each month?" I thought these answers were interesting.
Jim Bullinger- about 75 a month
Ian Kinsler- about 300
Bill Almon- 100
Andre Ethier- 150
JIm Sundberg- 75 to 100
On a side note, I highly encourage asking players questions. You will get some interesting answers. I am working on a book to give to my son and friends. Just note, that like signing, some players won't answer the questions either.
I will go through my files, and pull out some of the best answers.
I remember asking a retired player (I can't think of his name right now), "what city had the best, most informed, rowdy fans?" He said "Chicago, they always loose, but they keep on coming to the games."

Happy to report one of the better days I've had in a while...
Javier Vazquez c/o White Sox, 2/2 in blue sharpie. I sent this before the season started, but better late than never.
Sandy Alomar Jr., c/o White Sox, less than a month, 2/2.
Dustin Hermanson, c/o Charlotte Knights, sent from Chicago, signed 1/1. I am really happy about this one, for it is a 2005 World Series (ow, it hurts to say that) set card, so now I have 22/30.

Pesky was a great player, and is a great person. He has signed a couple cic's for me over the years. He was in fact, one of my first ttm success. He also signed my copy of the book "Teamates."
