View Full Version : My Daughter's First Baseball Game!

Today someone dropped some Cubs tickets into my lap, and since my 6-year old daughter had recently expressed an interest in going to a game ("Daddy, I want to go to a REAL game sometime with you, not a game where kids are playing, but a REAL game, just you and me.") I decided to take her to her first ever Major League Baseball game. We had really nice seats just above homeplate on the 3rd base side, got some really expensive cotton candy, and of course a Wrigley dog, we won a baseball autographed by Ron Santo and Pat Hughes, got a free Cubs towel, and some guy took our picture which will appear on Cubs.com/fanfotos tomorrow! My daughter decided that she wanted the Cubs to beat the Tigers, but alas, the Cubs got a terrible start from Glendon Rusch, and went on to lose 5-3.
So, I'm wondering if my dear little sweete has what it takes to be a baseball fan, much less a Cubs fan. She was pretty content all the way through the 8th inning, and I did my best to explain the game to her, and she decided she wants to watch the game on TV tomorrow. (Actually, she wanted to GO to the game tomorrow, but alas, we don't have tickets!)
Anyway, we had a great time, and I just thought I'd share with everyone here. :)

She shows the same interest in the game as my youngest daughter. She says she is a Yankee fan as well (maybe the attached picture proves something ;) ). But she loved her (and mine) first Yankee game at Anaheim Stadium.

BTW You have a cute daughter.

That is great that you guys had fun and she was content till the 8th... I'm lucky if my 7 year old makes it thru 6... (and thats with lots of food);)

I think I could have pushed her to make it all the way to the end, but we had to go collect our autographed baseball, and what not, so I figured we'd get on out. But usually I'm a die-hard, stay-till-the-end-of-the-game kind of fan.

Well thanks YR. I was watching another game with her on TV when we got home, and she remembered some of the things I told her earlier today. (4 balls and the batter gets to go to first, if the ball reaches the bag before the runner does, he's out, 3 outs and the other team gets a chance to bat, etc) so I was really impressed. I'm not going to push her, but I would love it if she really started loving this game. Man, would that ever be cool.
And may the same happen for you and your daughter. She's cute too. What team does she like again? :D :D

As long as she likes the game and the team she is fine...when she starts liking the players, especially those on the other team, that's when things get scary  :D

Hey, Sweet Lou:

That's one cute baseball fan you've got there, as others have said. :D

Did she enjoy some soda, popcorn, peanuts and Cracker Jack? Root for the home team? If so, she just may be a real baseball fan!

Once the rules are explained to her, she understands some of the strategy, watches it on the TV and reads a little in the paper, she'll learn. Of course, if Daddy sees a player making a crazy move resulting in a team loss, you may need to explain this to her gently. :p

"Daddy, why is your face getting all red?" :crazy

She's adorable! I hope Jeter's not her favorite player! :D
Or Johnson since she has a figurine I see.

Her name is Nienke (pronounce Neenkuh). She doesn't have a favorite player. Just the Yanks are her favorite. She has seen Johnson pitch in Anaheim.

BTW what's wrong with Jeter?

Sweet Lou, Happy Father's Day to yourself and other Dads. I've dedicated this Father's Day thread (http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=45471) to you and your sweet daughter. :)

Ahhh, you shouldn't put pictures of your kids up on the internet.
So long as last names and city where one lives aren't given, I don't see it as much of a problem as some others would.

No, kids shouldn't put pictures of themselves up on the internet.

I like that idea. Not adding the child's name, city or any other info, such as school, would be a great idea once the pic is out there.

Too many sickos out there.

here's my story:

May 3rd, 1999: The Angels are scheduled to face the visiting White Sox in a Monday day game. I had gotten 2 tickets to the game and I did what I needed to do for some of my Monday customers over the weekend so I could take the day off. On Monday I packed up my 4 year old future major leaguer for his first game.

He had started his baseball career a couple of years earlier watching the movie Sandlot over and over. When he had begun repeating some of the choicer words of dialogue around the house we had started him on watching real baseball games, which he took to.

At then-called Edison Field we got hot dogs and settled in for a good time. Our seats were pretty terrible. We were in about the 3rd row in the family section behind left field, which is behind the bullpen so there's a lot of the outfield you can't see. And we were right behind some White Sox fans (Angels tended to attract as many fans of their opponents as themselves to their games in those days) who had a large paper target that they intended for Frank Thomas to locate a home run into.

The game was one of Tim Belcher's last career starts, and he didn't have his best stuff that day. The Angels' offensive highlights were doubles by Orlando Palmeiro and Garret Anderson. The game was mainly memorable because Tim Salmon tweaked his wrist diving for a fly ball and was out for a couple of months.

The Angels did have a plane to catch later, so they got through the game very quickly. The White Sox won 8-1 in 2 hours and 8 minutes. But we'll always remember the day...
