SS Yuniesky Betancourt seemed to be doing well in his second year after spending a few months in the majors last season.

http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=435358

He is second in average, fourth in doubles and fifth in SLG. He is also providing a steady defense.

He started at Second Base, and watching him, I knew he had the stuff defensivly. Better than Boone by far. But coming in to this season, I personally didn't expect him to be that great offensivly. I was expecting some speed (10-20 SB) , little power (4-5 HR), and a not so amazing averege (around .250), with some doubles and triples. He has far exceeded my expectations for him this season offensivly, and in my opinion, he and Lopez (another great offensive surprise) are really the keys to this teams success. Not only offensivly providing runs, but defensivly I would say they are THE best defensive middle infield. Betancourt has the best glove at shortstop, and Lopez could definetly make a running at second too. The way these guys work together, you can tell they are friends, and when they turn the DP, they make it look like childs play.

In order for him to win a gold glove, he has to make at least 3 fewer errors than Jeter. Last year, Orlando Cabrera had the highest fielding percentage among AL SS and did not win the gold glove.

Betancourt was a second baseman for Villa Clara because this team has SS Eduardo Paret. Paret is the regular SS for team Cuba.

Anyone who is "surprised" by Jose Lopez clearly wasn't paying attention to his minor league statistics.

I am also not surprised about Betancourt.

BA is a simple function of your strikeouts, your HRs, and your speed. We know Betancourt is fast, we know he doesn't homer much (a negative that lowers BA) but we also know he rarely strikes out (a positive, because every time you put the ball in play you have roughly a 30% chance of it going for a hit if you're at all a decent major league hitter). It is also effected by things like Line-Drive percentage, groundball/flyball ratio and park, but I had no doubt in my mind that Betancourt would hit .270+ every year in his prime/

There was this thread about top ten second baseman a few weeks ago, but not a sentence about Jose Lopez. I injected his numbers but not a reply. Nobody has ever heard of him.

What a shot from Betancourt to tie the game in ninth!

--Yuni should be our starting SS and a good one for a long time. That would be true even he he only hit .250 (his glove is sooo sweet), but he looks like a much better hitter than that.
--Lopez is having a very nice season and also looks like a long term cog for the Mariners. He has struggled in the 3 hole though. Its way past time to slide him down in the order. He and Beltre combine for way too many outs at the top of the order (I'd be reluctant to move Adrian though since he seems comfortable for the first time since we signed him).

It's a misnomer to claim that Betancourt is a "light hitter"...his doubles and triples power will keep the SLG% up in his prime (which he has not reach yet) and he has the ability to hit 20 HRs one of these days as well. His power will improve just as Ozzie Smith's power did...he's that kind of hitter (albeit a little less patient)

leecemark
07-20-2006, 06:01 AM
--He would have to regress to develop Ozzie Smith power. Ozzie's career high in HR was 3 (28 total) and he never slugged .400 for a season.

This guy is 4th in ave among American League SS. This is very impressive for a second year player.

SABR Matt

he's proving how easy it is to hit .300 if you never strike out.

Nothing wrong with that when it comes attached to a glove like his. :)

Cubano,

Yuniesky (yoon-ee-ess-kee) Betancourt played in (60) games last year. Is he considered a rookie this year ? My buddy just loves Yuni. Thanks for the link.

Rennie Stennett
09-06-2006, 06:49 AM
Eligibility requirements were set forth in 1971 and a rookie was formally defined as a player with less than one-hundred thirty at-bats, a pitcher with less than fifty innings pitched, or anyone with less than forty-five days on any Major League roster.

Yuni had over 200 AB's in '05.

Cubano100%

Your are right. He is not eligible. How about the Mariners MVP? Probably, Ichiro or J. Putz will win it.

papa~smurf
09-06-2006, 05:22 PM
Wrong.

Mariners MVP without a doubt is Raul Ibanez. Ask anyone who watches the game, who is the most consistant Mariner, who is having a career year under the radar this year, and who would you want up at the plate with the game on the line. There is really no contest. JJ and Ichiro have been solid, but not MVP status.

Rennie Stennett
09-06-2006, 06:22 PM
I wouldn't say he's wrong, just a difference of opinion. Yuni is having a great year. He's fun to watch and he's having fun out there.

Putz came in when they needed a stopper and he's done a fine job. Sure Ibanez is having a great year but so are a bunch of guys.

Cubano100%
09-06-2006, 07:27 PM
I still think Putz should get it. I know that an everyday player is more deserving than a pitcher, but he has done a very good job after being named the closer.

However, Ibanez is CubanAmerican and Betancourt is Cuban. So either one is fine with me. :laugh :waving :dance :coffee

Next year,...if he stays healthy, the Mariners' MVP will be Chris Snelling.

Bank it.

From the Seattle Times baseball power rankings:

"With Snelling now in at Right Field, the position has gone from 'Bone' to 'Broken Bone'."

On the MVP, JJ has been solid out of the pen, and very valuable to the team, I am proud to say that the Mariners have the best bullpen in baseball, anchored by the best closer in baseball. It isn't that I think a position player is more deserving, it is that Raul has been the "Most Valuable Player" for this team. How many times has Raul been up at a critical time for the Mariners, and it seems he comes through every time. If this were a discussion of the Red Sox MVP, Papi or Papelbon, I think everyone would say Ortiz.

Raul is our Ortiz.

Raul is the man. Loved the guy during his first brief stint in Seattle - I just had a feeling he'd turn into a great player. I really expected him to be the end to our "rotating door" in Left Field.

Ibanez, Griffey Jr., and Buhner.

But, then we got rid of him.

The thing that amazes me, really, is how great he is at taking the outside pitch to the opposite field. Pitchers seem afraid to pitch inside to Raul, so they throw outside, and he lines it down the line. Never fails.

He's got 19 doubles at Safeco Field this year:
12 doubles on the left side of 2B, 7 doubles on the right side of 2B.
6 doubles down the left-field line. 2 doubles down the right field line.

Dayton Moore is really starting to resemble Bavasi with him acquiring a bunch of low on base guys, a lot of former Mariners who aren't that good. Good former Mariners usually wind up in Philadelphia or Cleveland, the guys who can't play end up at Kauffman. :laugh
