Hey all. I'm 16 and im a catcher. I've been working on my footwork for throws down to second, but now I simply need more power to throw it more on a line. What exercises should i be doing? Thanks alot guys.

Forget about your feet. I just get sick about coaches talking about the feet. I can show you two catchers, identical footwork, one does things right, one does things wrong.

Move your center properly. Control your hips. Maintain the vertical load as you receive the ball.

Work on no stride throwing.

First, see my post on the grip here:

A loose grip and perfect backspin is fundamental to getting the ball to jump out of your hand.

As far as exercises, squeeze a pink rubber ball or Heavy Grips. You can also do dumbbell wrist curls and any other exercises that strengthen your forearm and wrist. The Dr. Jobes exercises for the shoulder, using dumbbells and/or resistance bands, are also good for building arm strength and preventing injury.

Mostly, though, is working on your throwing mechanics and footwork. A power arm is more the result of outstanding technique combined with repetition.

Get your mechanics as perfect as possible, and build your arm strength by throwing longer distances. Start by throwing to second base, then have your receiver move back five feet at at time. Continue to throw ON A LINE --- do NOT arc the ball to reach your partner. You are better off getting the ball there on a bounce. Stop the distance when you must bounce the ball to reach the destination. Every day, aim to extend your range a few more feet.

Thanks alot. I threw today with a couple friends, and i tried out the lighter grip a bit. Seems to work, and I'll try it in my game tomorrow.

plant your feet about shoulders length apart and play catch with a friend. That will help you work on your arm strength and throwing with your hips.

Get farther and farther away so it gets harder.
