View Full Version : It's Still Early!!!

I cannot tell you how annoyed I am at all of the baseball prophesizers who don't have the ability to see into the future, but will try to make everyone believe that they do. Here are some of the popular assumptions:
The Mets will win The World Series. Yeah, they are knocking the cover off of the ball, but, did everyone see Glavine throw over a 100 pitches in less than 5 innings last night? Will age catch up with Glavine, Pedro, El Duque, Wagner and Co.? Who knows ... but, I think it's too early to put them in The World Series.
The Wild Card will come out of the AL Central. It's possible. It hasn't happened in years ... but, it's possible. I'm sorry to be the skeptic, but, I'm sure everyone remembers how hard Baltimore fell last year. Detroit is good now, but, will they be able to maintain it for the rest of the season? I'm not a believer. I'm also an Indians fan .. so ..
The Braves are done! No one remembers their turn around from a year ago. Sure they have some unsettling obstacles ... but, they have been counted out for the past few years, turned it around and ended up leaving the post-season early as usual. When they got hot last month, everyone got on their bandwagon, now that they are struggling ... everyone's counting them out.
A-Rod won't hit .300. Yeah, right. A-Rod will end the season with his typical numbers, as great baseball players do, and we will look back on his being booed as silly as it actually is.
In the end, there is a world of baseball left to be played and too many people get all prediction happy, as if injuries, major slumps or win streaks don't happen. Who knows what deals will be done to make teams better? I would not be surprised if Atlanta wins the division, or if Houston gets hot - again and ends up winning the NL Championship. At this point, anything can happen.

I saw Glavine throw 100 pitches in under 5 innings last night, but I also saw him win 9 games with an era in the 2's this year. The Mets are playing very well right now and are clearly the best team in the nl, with the Cardinals being the second best.
The Wild Card will not necessarily come out of the central. The Yankees and the Blue Jays should both be better than the Indians at year end and I am not a believer in the Tigers.

It is early, but the Mets have clearly been the best team in the NL so far, and this is coming from a huge Cardinals fan. Yes, Glavine was bad last night, but this was the first start of the year Glavine didn't pitch at least into the 6th. I know he is no Mark Mulder or Jeff Suppan or anything :laugh :laugh :laugh , but 9-2 ain't bad for a 40 year old. The lineup is loaded, the bullpen is much improved, and if the Mets deal for a #3 starter, they will clearly be the team to beat in the NL.
Look at the Cardinals for a second. Pujols is out for several more weeks and the Cardinals outfield is statisticaly one of the worst offensive units in baseball. They have also recieved no offense at second or catcher. The lone bright-spot is Rolen, who is hitting the heck out of the ball. Marquis, Suppan, and Mulder have been wildly inconsistent (Mulder has been just plain bad his last 4 starts), and Carpenter and Ponson have both been on the DL this year. (We don't even need to mention Izzy's control problems.) This team is loaded with questions right now.
I agree that if Pujols comes back healthy and all of our pitchers pitch to their capabilities, the Cardinals will be right there, but as of today, the Mets have to be the favorites.

The Mets are indeed the favorites, as they should be considering the way that they have been playing, however, there is plenty of baseball left to be played and ANYTHING can happen. Sure, if they stayed playing the way that they have, they will win it this year and next year ... but, will they stay playing the way that they have? Not likely. It is rare for a team to be this good ALL year. And when they do hit a skid ... will they be able to recover and put the pieces back together? Who knows?
It is fun to predict and assume, then climb down on people when they don't achieve, but I have to believe that there are some things that are going to happen to make things very tight and interesting down to the last out.

I hope you are right. I would acctualy love to see a mets vs. Cardinals NLCS.
By the way, it is not unusual for a team to have a .630 W% all season.

How did I know this was going to be mainly about the NL East... before I even looked at it
The Braves do not have the pitching or hitting to compete in the division... its between the Mets and Phils

Anyone want to tell me after what just happened tonight that "it's still early"? Anyone?

Bobby Cox is looking for miracle, maybe for 2007.

Yep yep. In the meantime, the Braves are doing a very nice Kansas City Royals impression.

Please, thats stupid, the Braves were supposed to contend, the Royals were supposed to finish dead last at preseason.

I'm sure KC Royals fans would happily switch records with the Braves.... the Braves are more games back than they've played

It's still early.
All it takes is for a few key players to go down and things open wide. Hell, Pujols went down and it was as if he was pitching, because the pitching went on the DL with him. But, the hitting has been good .. go figure.
I'll wait until August to place my stakes on ANY team. It's way too early for teams like The Braves to hit the panic button and for people to assume that any team at the top of a division will win that division. Too much time left.
History tells you so.

Yeah, I agree. Its early! There are a few teams I think are 'for real" this year. Including the Tigers, the Mets, and the Blue Jays, I think Toronto has a legitimate shot this year. The NLW is a complete toss-up but I thin Oakland is going to win the ALW. All of a sudden the NLC has gotten interesting. Its going to be an interesting September.
